Thumbs up Good News! The Navy is building Ford's!

Actually, they're starting on the newest class of Aircraft Carrier:

For more than six decades, aircraft carriers have been involved in virtually every major American military engagement, from World War II to the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. But America’s carrier fleet is getting old. Designs for today’s Nimitz-class ships began in 1964, and although upgraded, the carriers’ steam-powered catapults and cramped quarters belong to another era. So, for the first time in two generations, the Navy is commissioning a new carrier, named after President Ford, who served with distinction on the carrier Monterey during World War II. Following custom, each subsequent ship constructed to these specs will be named after him: the Ford class of carriers.

Maybe it's just me, but I never saw the wisdom of naming major capital ships after presidents. I mean, it you have a Yorktown, Enterprise, Hornet, etc., those names have no possible connotation to a specific individual who may or may not be held in such high esteem as to name a major warship after them.

Without getting political, if I were in many places in the world, I would feel my blood boiling seeing any warship named Bush in nearby waters (regardless if pertaining to father or son)!

Can we please keep this non-political and discuss the development of the newest ship?

Very interesting article, I thought, about the processes being used to design and build it.

How is naming a ship not part of its development?

Let's just build it, cast it off, and when we need it, call out over the lines for the 'big, gray, floating thing'. The name was a decision like all others in its creation.
