Those on our base had their bells rung pretty good as well. The buildings shook, windows and doors opened, AC units came off walls and even my own personal computer was damaged when the smoke detector flew off my ceiling and landed on my keyboard (it couldn't hit my army peice of crap computer right???). Anyway, the Commander is having a ramp ceremony today for our fallen.
The Coalition Forces and National Police put up a good fight when they saw the truck coming towards them. They shot the truck and destroyed the engine block and tires but the momentum of the truck was too great. The driver was able to detonate himself and the truck on one of the coalition force vehicles. They tell us it was about 10,000 lbs of explosives that took the convoy out so I'm sure it all happened very quick for them and our Soldiers went down quickly with no prolonged pain. The crater the explosion left was 55x53x11 feet deep. When I went outside my building to check to see if it was an incoming attack, the plume in the city was just huge and the black smoke from the vehicles burned for a good 30 minutes I would say. While on base I was even able to hear the rounds in the hit vehicles cook off from the fire which even made our feelings worse and confirmed it was a convoy of some sorts that was hit before the official reports came in. So
if you can pass the word on to say some prayers for not only the 5 KIA and 2 WIA of our own, but the national police here suffered 2 KIA and 17 WIA, I would really appreciate it. Feel free to pass this info on since I'm sure many have heard the news already and may be asking of my status.
