1500 mile road trip, Turbo shake down!

Yep, just wrapped up a 1500 mile marathon road trip this weekend in the turbo Cherokee. left Thursday night for a drive out to Minnesota to see one of my iEMS3 distributors, and do some tweaking on Jerry's 392 Supercharged Ram Pick up.

My Cherokee now has over 7,000 miles on the turbo system and the iEMS3 engine management system. Over the 1500 miles, I averaged 18.2 mpg, three adults, our luggage, the wiener dog, and the AC on. I averaged 80 mph over 95% of the trip.

This is about 2 mpg better than I would get under those conditions when the Cherokee was stock. While the increase won't pay for a turbo system in short order, it certainly is a nice side benefit (I should apply for a Government stimulus bonus for those buying a system!).

They were in shock at just how well behaved a turbo system would run on the new Hemi using the iEMS3 for the tuning end of things.

Their jaws dropped when I showed then how I could brake torque at the line without moving, and hold 5 lbs of boost for the launch! They had never seen one do that before without either falling on it's face off the line, or the ECU just completely freaking out. None of those shenanigans on mine!

Next addition will be a prototype tranny valve body for the late model Hemi's in the Cherokee to stiffen up the shifts and to cut down the time of the actual shift. Should be very interesting after seeing how Jerry's Ram 545 tranny shifted (hard and fast!).

If anyone is going out to the St. Louis Monster Mopar weekend the end of September, stop by the pit area, you will find my turbo Jeep in the 5.7 bracket class looking for some 5.7 wins!

My 2006 5.7 turbocharged 300C logged over 36,000 miles on the turbo system, 30,000 miles running the iEMS2 (generation 2) without any issues, and now we are repeating the same thing on the turbo Cherokee!

    Got Boost?

    We do!

That's good to hear Tim. Now I just need to get my car back together and try out the turbo and iEMS3.

And no red lights this year. lol

Tim's sleeper Jeep is a riot. I can't wait to take it down the track. Leaving the line with 5 lbs of boost should get the Jeep to 60' quite well, plus with AWD the street tires don't spin much. Just a chirp and your gone.

    The following are the changes made from the G2 to the G3 version;

    - Complete 3D maps, one each for fuel and ignition.
    - Ability to specify size of both maps.
    - Ability to choose span between load and rpm cells.
    - One extra PWM-output in IS8G3 (normally used for progressive control of water/meth injection or could be used for nitrous control)
    - Two additional tuneable digital outputs to control relays, shift lights, low amperage 12v functions, etc.

More and more people are experiencing the control that the iEMS3 can provide, both Trojan and Josh from HHP witnessed what it can do first hand at the LX and Beyond Nationals, they were very impressed.

Wow the way you told the story has me all excited for a turbo system. I lik ethat you can brake torque and hold boost, that is crazy! Of course I won't be getting one by nice job on what you have done.

Nice Tim! I'm still watching to see which way I want to go when I do finally start with the motor. Bring it out this weekend: http://lxforums.com/board/showthread.php?t=178129

Oh, I forgot to mention that I had a long talk with Adam from Spankin Time at the LX and Beyond event. We really got into some nuts and bolts of tuning these vehicles, and he saw the iEMS3 system and I gave him an explanation as to how it works. I hope to work with Adam in the future as we hit it off pretty well.

Well I have been playing with the Dashhawk now that I upgraded the software/firmware so that I have the performance tests now.

A stock Jeep GC with the 5.7 averages a 0-60 in 7 seconds.

Holding 3.5 psi boost at launch on the converter stall, It pulled a 0 - 60 in 4.76 seconds!

The calculators indicate it is somewhere around 500 - 510 crank HP to achieve this 0-60 time.

The SRT-8 GC has the benefit of a 3.59 1st gear versus my 3.0 and a 2.19 2nd gear versus my 1.67 2nd gear ratio. Both have 3.73 axle ratios.

Impressive for a stock 5.7 in a 5000 lb Jeep with simply a bolt on tubo.

Next I am going to change the iEMS3 boost control map to give me 5 psi on the converter stall and see if the brakes will hold it without moving. I also have a new prototype valve body to go into the tranny to stiffen/shorten the shifts.
