    Magnum HDR Photoshoot

After playing around with HDR imaging at the Botanical Gardens photoshoot I just had to try it out on a car. I am officially ADDICTED! I am absolutely in love with the amount of control you can have over the images.

FYI...the "Merge to HDR" function in CS3 and "local adaptation" during 16bit conversion was the only method of manipulation to all of these images.

These have to be my absolute favorite shots I've ever taken of my car...

Dope! Absolutely Amazing. I love the shots. I love HDR..It's time to convert to CS3 for me. What did you use for lighting? A write up is necessary for the "Merge to HDR" deal, got any links? Keep up the great skills! What lens(es) did you use for your shots? 1 & 4 are my favorite, 4 would have been absolute money if there was more of an overcast. I love clouds in HDR.

Thanks guys. As for the technical details Canon 5D with 24-105 F4L IS. As for lighting, all of the images were shot using a painting with light technique. Most of these shots had the shutter open for 15+ seconds @ F22 which gives you a lot of time to control lighting over the subject. I use a 550EX hotshoe flash with an omni bounce diffuser and do about 3 pops at various powers with the flash in manual mode. I do 1 for the whole subject at full power with the flash head at 75 degree angle so the light is very diffused. The 2 at 1/8th power I pop directly on the sides to light the black wheels and also show the angle/line along the side of the car...and another directly from the front.

As far as a write up about the local adaptation thing... its really about experimenting and knowing how a histogram works. The manipulation comes from exagerating or creating high and low points where you want. The shot of the headlight was probably the hardest to work with to make it look how I wanted. Its still not what I was hoping for but still kinda cool. My goal with the first 2 shots was absolute realism. I wanted to see how technical I could get with balancing the curves and everything because regardless how much you light it at dusk there will always be huge gaping shadows or blown highlights if its over. The glowy affect seemed to be a result of playing with the low areas in the histogram.

on a side note, working with the canon software in raw working with all the levels there and then taking it to cs3 for 16bit hdr edit gives great results...

Thanks! I know what you mean now I wanna go back and reshoot stuff. I was getting bored with just traditional photogaphy and wanted to try something new.

You got some great results, Ryan.

A little of topic: What tripod would you recommend? I've gotten some "decent" HDR results just doing it hand-held but, I want to play with a bunch of new stuff now.
