    Removing Side moldings

Ok guys, I started removing the side molding but it took me 2 hrs to do one door. I used the fishing line, wd40, blow dryer and its 91 degrees outside. It left all the adhesive on the door so I had to use a old atm card and my fingers to remove the excess adhesive. and now I got the strip where the adhesive use to be. HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP. I think I messed up. I went and bought a clay bar showtime detail spray and wax kit. But I am afraid to use it, Its my first time. DAMN I FEEL DUMBBBBB.

Jose, see if you can find some stuff called "Goo Gone", I think they still carry it at PepBoys and many other auto parts stores. It does a great job of removing the glue residue.

wow, 2 hours. I have a B&D heat gun and it worked very well and i just started at one end of the molding and it just peeled off in no time. Make sure you take off the adhesive when it is still hot and it is easier to come off and come off the best with your thumb.

As for your ghosting I believe some call it, you can use a clay bar as that will work better than waxing it but it is a pain to get that off.

    Good luck

    +1

Use a microfiber towel. Soak a little spot on the towel with GooGone, then rub it into the residue. Keep rotating the towel on the clean spots and soak again (the glue sticks to the towel).

You must take pictures when you are done!

I never blamed the molding. I was blaming the adhesive. Damn 3M. I must say they make a great product if you never want to remove stuff ever again. BUT JEEZ. At least make something u can use to remove it. OH wait they did. DUMB me just forgot to go buy it.(Need to do better research next time)

Ok Ok I will admit it I MESSED UP. I was rushing it. It was 91 degrees out and they were redoing my street so I had to deal with the heat from the tar as well. It will be done right this weekend tho.

When I removed the molding from the passenger side front door on our Mangum, the adhesive was different and a royal pain to take off! I think it has been replaced at one point... It left a LOT of residue. I considered a few options, but finally settled on Naptha and a micro fiber cloth. The Naptha loosened the adhesive and then it stuck to the micro fiber cloth.

All in all, it took about 10 minutes of fussing with this one door, but once I used the clay bar, Zymol and a Canuba chaser, all was good

You can get Naptha in small quantites in stores, sold as Ronson for Zippo lighters... Sounds extreme, but I haven't had any issues with the Naptha and the clear coat.

    Just my .02.

    Hope this helps,
    Bob

You are fortunate as some of us have had the paint blister when the strips are removed. I had one that did it which required an expensive door repaint and clearcoat.
I used the Goo Gone and the alcohol for final cleaning as you mentioned
