Or, "So Close and Yet So Far" or, "Undone by Technology".
(Made possible by PPP, House of Power, HHP, BG Chrysler, GSM, SVS Dyno, Moore Chrysler-Jeep and many others, including Fast56K, Cam, and my family, which has endured my insanity with dignity and grace.)
For those of you who haven't noticed, I've been quite scarce on the forums, especially so in any threads having to do with the quest for an 11.xx time slip or power modifications.
It's now fitting that I fill in the blanks re. what was going on behind the scenes: I last reported in when the inner race of my 5.7 CV joint broke during day 1 of Rumble in the Desert. Well, that was quickly repaired, and, some 16 hours later, on day 2 of Rumble, the 5.7 Quaife failed me.
Now perhaps some explanation is due to explain why my forever bullet-proof Sweet C is suddenly breaking parts left and right: I reckon it's mostly PPP's fault, though Diablo certainly weighs in there, along with a number of others. But I wasn't really making much headway in my chase of an 11.xx time slip until I called Jeremy and told him I needed the biggest, baddest, nastiest cam they could come up with to perk up my chase of the 11s; driveability is secondary I told him. Jeremy tasked Andy with coming up with the cam, which he called the Meister Warrior. I just called it my Thunder Stick.
Thunder Stick arrived and my dear dealer, Moore Chrysler-Jeep installed it, doing a superb job. The earth now moved under my feet when I turned the key.
Meanwhile back east, Hemi~C~ and PowerWagon896 are scaring the p-wadding out of me with their near misses. Finally, my prayers are answered, and old man winter shut those boys down for a spell. And here's where I figured I had to be very low-key - invisible if possible. 'Cause I figured if I spooked those boys by letting them know I was coming they may make a run to the south till they found an open drag strip, and go ahead and snag that 11-second time slip. I figured I had several months, IF I could just keep everything quiet. So, mums the word.
I made somewhat slow but steady progress and times were down to the 12.6s or so, with our high DAs. Then came Rumble in the Desert. 2 quick component failures, back to back. At that point I decided it was time to upgrade to a 6.1 rear end, which I did, Quaife and all.
First time out I snapped the right end off of the 6.1 half shaft. Scott, at GSM, came through with a beautiful set of 1000 hp half shafts for me, and a 6.1 Quaife, both of which my dealer installed.
I was now loaded for bear. Scott fine-tuned a sweet 412 hp/412 torque out of her, I ran a near-90 mph in the 1/8th at Irwindale, and I was ready to go to Sacramento for an 11.xx.
(To be continued after Spring Fling)
Preview: Scant hours before Hemi~C~ finally bagged his 11, on the Saturday he was, yet again, weathered-out, I was at Sacramento Raceway gunning for the 11-second pass. Conditions were awesome. DA was sub-Sea Level, temp was in the 60's, and a fresh breeze on the tail signaled victory ahead. Dyno tuner par-excellence Bob Crespo was on hand to data log and fine tune his great dyno tune as needed. CV was there to add his karma. In short, conditions, by west coast standards, could not have been better.
MPH on my first pass, with the rich tune, when I should have instead loaded the lean tune, was a tiny smidge shy of 114 mph. "This is looking very good", I thought to myself. "With the lean tune I'd have probably been 116, maybe better..."
