Limp mode is hurting my burnout mojo!! Please help!

I went from a taller wheel/drag radial combo back to a smaller diameter combo and now once again have a hard time not hitting limp mode.

I tried starting in second gear but the first time I only got to about 4500 before slowing and the second time when I gave it more gas it hit limp mode again.

My first burnout in 1st gear was the best but as soon as I let off the brakes it seems the rpms shoot up (even when I'm off the gas) and BANG - limp mode.

My shift points are at 6400 and my rev limiter is either at 6400 or 6500. I could try dropping my rev limiter but don't want to hit the limiter just before shifting.

Any suggestions? Hitting limp mode every time or doing a half-assed burnout is really affecting my mojo and my confidence in launching the car.

Also sometimes after re-starting the car is in some kind of safe mode and feels like timing is being pulled heavily for the first half of the quarter mile. It only does this sometimes though

    Raise your rev limiter.

I had it about as high as it could go (last time I had short rims/tires) and it would still do it. I need to hit the rev limiter to keep from going into limp mode but it flashes the RPMs too fast. With the bigger tires it would hit 6500 rpm over and over during the burnout and just keep bouncing off the limiter which was no problem.

Jeff raise the rev limiter up to about 6800 rpm. That is what my 5.7 is at and it shifts at 6400

You don't need to redline to do a burnout.

If you're unable to manage this, simply put the car into autostick mode, and essentially the second you floor the gas, shift up to 2nd gear. It'll pause long enough to climb high in the rpm range in 1st, then shift to 2nd just in time before you redline it.

I just put the car in 2nd using autostick and then do my burnout. If the RPMs get too high I let off a bit, I try to hold it around 4000-5000. I've hit limp mode a few times because I was watching the mirrors to see if both tires were spinning and wasn't paying attention to the RPM. I shouldn't have to worry about that now.

Thanks guys! Sounds like there is no magic pill I was hoping for. I'll play around with the rev limiter some more (lower and higher). I need to set up a burnout box in my driveway for practice. I hope the neighbors don't mind :-)

everytime we raise the shift points, we go into limp mode during the burnout at the 1-2 shift. Just keep it in first gear for the burnout, drag radials do not need to get that hot.
