    05 R/t Awd 5.7

Just new here. I know it's a topic that has been hashed to hell, maybe not.

Was looking for last 6 mos for a Magnum if possible on a certain budget.

Tripped into a fully loaded for a great value.

Anyways, the previous test drives were all with rear wheel drive.
Since picking up the car, 11 days ago, I've noticed something that didn't seem to be there previously. Not having driven any other awd's, owned some 4x4's previously, I might be noticing something only because I'm now driving daily.

When driving the car from a long park. Cold. There seems to be a bind in the drive when going to lock on steering left or right. It also groans a bit and creates some tire slippage. Is this normal. I know from past, 4x4 dry pavement run causes binding due to the difference travelled on a locked axle between inside tire and outside tire.
Also, there seems to be a lot of resistance on the low acceleration like a stuck caliper. Brakes have been checked, negative on that.

Anyways, grabbed an extended warranty to 160K or Oct 2010 and already have it booked for a look see at shop tomorrow a.m.

Was just wondering about dynamics of the drivetrain under normal operation.

I have not had any issues with the AWD drivetrain. For normal driving you should not see any difference in handling. Could the transfer case or diff be an issue?

    Cheers,

    Tom

Do you know if your car has ever had the service for the AWD shudder TSB done? If not, that could be part of the problem. The way it typically shows up is as a shuddering during slow turns with the wheels turned hard one way or the other (as in when parking). I don't recall the TSB number though... hopefully someone else will chime in with that.

I have the warranty service records downloaded, but don't know if they are complete. However. The way you describe the problem LowGo, you are bang on as to the feel, plus there is a low moan in the drivetrain.

TSB....I'm guessing.... ? service bulletin. Will quote at dealer and see what they say.

HemiHearse, just going to search your posts for shudder as soon as I post this.

    Thanks all for your replies.

The Eric Harris. There's an obvious answer to your question in this thread already. If the TSB exists, it will usually involve a manufacturer's update to correct the shudder. (This is where SparkyTO clicks his heels and smiles).

Have found the answer, Technical Service Bulletins, but of course.

    Now off to the dealer.

Yeah, saw that after I posted the question. I'm looking at a 2006 Magnum AWD that was bought in August 2005, so I'm going to see if this TSB has been done. Will Chrysler honer this TSB even if you are outside the warranty? I'm guessing not..

A TSB is not a recall. It is an advisory to technicians on how to diagnose and repair common problems. If the warranty is valid, then the warranty applies.

Back from the dealer and "done" is absolutely correct. It is only an information bulletin for a common mechanical failure, that does not affect any passenger safety protocols. I guess that the Tech's recognize the complaint is affecting costs for diagnosing this type of issue that might be happening fairly often. The service check in waitress kindly reminded me that my bumper-to-bumper(car has 74K) was invalid. I not so kindly pointed out the extended option that was purchased thru her sales department to 160K. Another time about her. She called the info on this website possible riff raff. I told her I get more riff raff from her side of the desk than anywhere else historically speaking in a generalized way. She countered that some info being passed around is being done by individuals with an IQ of twenty. I told her that may be true(haha), but that intelligence takes a back seat to real life experience most days in my book.

The Service Manager test drove for the pulsing brake and shudder, but of course the car refused to co-operate since the problem usually disappears with a hot power train. He however digressed to say that it wasn't the TSN referred to above, he said that one doesn't apply to MY car, but it was another TSN for which some clutch parts have to be ordered with about a side order of 5 hours shop time. No charge, warranty.

Ponder this. TSN's are even held back from the shops like Nationwide transmission shops, where the problem becomes more expensive to the customer, usually post warranty(who is going to fix a major component thru the dealer based on their pricing?), and since they do not have the diagnostic intelligence TSN's offer for diagnosis and end up costing more time to find and fix, then develope a parallel service bulletin for the franchise locations use.
TSN's are coveted by Chrysler. Kept confidential from everyone.
Why? Well, if a group of owners found expense for repairing something that in essence is a manufacturing ERROR, can you spell lawsuit.
