sounds like a faulty switch on the tranny/brake...probably worth taking to the dealer.

Defonate shift interlock cable problem.Make sure when this is happening that the brake lights are working. If they are then it may be a bad solonoid on the interlock cable.

Have you tried the manual override release button to the right of the shifter under the rubber pocket thing? Mine has this and I assume all the LX have them, but I could be wrong.

There is also another pink switch under the shifter (on the 5 speeds at least) that you may need to check as well by taking apart the trim on the console. There is a known problem with a plastic shifter spring clip breaking. This usually happens all at once instead of intermittently though.

Had it happen to me not too terribly long ago, I made a post about it with the part numbers and approximate price. Mine was under warranty so no big deal for me there...I'll see if I can find it for you...

    Edited to add:

    shifter problems and fix

That thread is all about it.

    Damn thats some expensive Venison....

Hopefully you wont have the hassle that I had. They got the right part, but the wrong shift cable or some garbage so it took them an extra like three hours waiting for the right part. Mind you that could well have been the service manager BS'ing me because they forgot to order the part in the morning...

when you rock it do you hear a clunk when it comes out. Also do you park it on a hill?? If so then that is normal. I had the same problem when i first got my 300 and the manual says that theres a locking mechanism that locks the shifter and you have to rock it. So what I do now is before I put it in park is drop the park break and the regular break at the same time. Then i put the shifter in the N position and release the regular brake. The car moves a bit then i put it in park. That might be ur issue.
    Hope this helps

There was a recall for '05 for that problem. The dealer will fix it.

Sorry for the late post. I took it back four times. They can't find anything wrong with it of course. I'm going to take it to a different dealer. For now i just been pushing the pink button to release it. i will keep posting.
