    Smoky smell coming from engine

Well I have noticed a smoky kind of smell from my engine compartment for the past couple of months. Everytime I smell it it's within 300 miles when I'm due for an oil change. I drive my car very hard and I haul ass at every green light.

Mods: airhammer ho, diablo 91 tune, blastin bobs exhaust.

Has anyone had the same problem? Or know what it might be?

My guess is the oil is braking down and starting to burn off more. My airplane engine does just that it will run for 45-48 hours with out using a drop of oil then the rest of the way to the 50 hour change it burns upto a half quart per hour.

X2 If your not using synthetic, now might be a good time to switch. Also, people think that the 3.5 is not a high performance motor, it certainly is. It's a hotter motor than the 6.1's If you extrapolate 3.5 liters @250 hp, a 6.1 would have 436 hp. Also, a cooler thermostat might take some heat away from the oil.

Change your PVC valve if you haven't yet. Also check the hose that goes from the valve cover to the air filter housing. Make sure it's snug. When I first got my 2006 Magnum (bought it with 17k on it) and I went to change my air filter for the first time, there was some oil on the air filter. Think it was being drawn in from the afore mentioned hose. After I changed my PCV valve, never had any oil on my air filter again.

Hard to say exactly what your problem might be without knowing more, like how many miles you have on your car, wheter or not you have some kind of oil leak, etc. Always best to start with the simple stuff first, though.

Here is a pic of the PCV valve location. If you are facing the front of the engine, it is located in the back left corner underneath. The pcv valve just screws into the block. The hard part is getting your hands down in there as there is not much room to work with.

Also, make sure both ends of the hose leading from your valve cover to your air filter casing is snug on both ends. Over time, the underhood heat can cause these to swell and become less snug. You members that live in the sunshine states probably will get less life out of such things as hoses and belts because you are driving in hotter temps than us poor souls that live in the snow states.
