    Got a tick!

My car has developed a ticking noise over the last few weeks and I can't seem to pinpoint where in the engine it is coming from. It seems to be worse when it gets cold(it was 30-40 degrees this morning)and is constant. The faster I go the louder it gets and sounds like a diesel engine running. I have an appointment monday at the delaership to get it looked at but wanted to see if anyone here could know what it is. I am also wondering if it's something major would it be covered under the 8year/80,000 limited power train warranty? I have 45,000 miles on it so it's out of the bumper to bumper warranty. Any help is appreciated!

I think I know what sound you are talking about, and it's something my car constantly makes since I bought her....I think its just the lifters you hear.

Thanks! That sounds exactly the same as mine. I don't have my most recent reciept for my oil so I hope they don't ask for it.

It's your lifters, and it is not just Mopars that suffer from this problem, it exists in gas VWs, fords and chevs. A lifter needs good film strength in the oil. Are you using an oil that is rated SM. Your 2006 requires an oil meeting SL. SL oils are fortified with ZDDP a smear type additive, where Sm oils are formulated without. I hope this info helps.

People should not post on subjects about which they clearly know nothing.

ZDDP (Zinc Dialkyl-Dithio-Phosphate) is found in both SL and SM rated oils. It is not a "smear" type additive (whatever that is). It's an extreme pressure anti-wear additive. The level of ZDDP is reduced in SM rated oils, but other additives are used synergistically with the reduced ZDDP to perform the same anti-wear function so that the protection in a modern engine is essentially just as good as oils with higher treat levels of ZDDP.

One does not have to be so harsh toward another trying to help out. Brainstorming a problem is what we do here and we learn from each other. Ive learned you know stuff, but came off as a pompous mule. IMO.

time bomb...... all mopars have them..... j/k you think Mopars are bad hahahah try Suzuki's. sounds like a typwriter amplified on acid hahahaha , I find some and I stress SOME are pretty good at covering a lifter adjustment upon a first or second visit with maybe a newer car, but if you have warranty, take it in, have them adjusted, they need to be adjusted every 40-50.000 miles

What sort of "adjustment" is possible with the hydraulic lifters used on a 3.5? There is nothing in the maintenance schedule regarding any valve adjustments. The 3.5 in my 99 300M went 100,000 miles without any adjustments (and there was no valve adjustment listed in its maintenance schedule, either).
