I currently have a 2006 Charger SE with a 3.5 and a 5 speed trans. The only mods on the car that could affect anything are my AirHammer HO and a Mopar Dual Outlet Exhaust. Recently I noticed the car getting a ticking noise. It sounded like sensors clicking off, only louder. I chalked it up to being cold and having an AirHammer installed. Last night I was driving to dinner with my girlfriend, and you could hear the ticking inside the car pretty clearly. Upon inspecting the car with the hood open, this horrific sound could not possibly be sensors. I checked the oil and it was low (only on the VERY bottom of the dipstick). After adding 3 quarts, the oil was still only on the very bottom of the dipstick (up to the twist, not MIN).
My question is this. The car has a hair over 30k on it. It does not leak or smoke. The coolant looks good. With how I drive my car, the dealer recommended the 6k oil change schedule. I have a little over 5k on this oil change. Where the f$%k did my oil go? Are there any known issues with this engine? How much damage could I have caused my engine (even after adding oil to the acceptable range, there is still a faint ticking). I did purchase the extended warranty to 100K, but the deductable is $100 after the 36k warranty is up. The car goes in on Monday, but I would like to know what I could possibly be dealing with.

IIRC, chrysler considers one quart per 1000 miles is not excessive. if you're only going to change it every 6000 miles, then you better check it at least every second fuel fill. the only way your oil will protect for 6000 miles is with a full crankcase.
as for any possible damage caused, doubtful but only time will tell. if the oil pressure warning indicator did not illuminate then there should have been sufficient pressure to lubricate.
After this I may just leave it on the 3k mile schedule. I'm usually good about checking that, but I guess I have gotten lazy as the car has never used more then 1/2 quart in 3k. I'll definately keep a closer eye on it. Thanks for the response, though.![]()
If your going to change at 6,000 mile intervals, you might switch to synthetic, if you don't already run it. Is it possible that the oil filter gasket had a leak? Put it up on a lift, if it leaked that much the underside of the car would be covered. Free rustproofing!
