To run 22's or not to run 22's that is my question

I need some help,, I trying to figure out,,,,, should I buy 22's rims and tires or 20's my mechanic is telling me not to run 22's on my maggie because over a period of time he says its going to wear down the suspension. He says that he spends alot of time repairing renta cars from AVIS and Hertz that have these problems because of 22"s. Now me I love to drive ,,but I also want bling ,,so can I get some input please.

I dont see why 22's would be any worse than 20's. Yes, I agree that with the added weight on each corner that it will take a toll on the suspension and brakes, but I have had 22's on my car since I got it in 2004 and have 52k miles on the car now and I am on stock brake rotors and pads and was on stock shocks still. That was after having lowering springs on the car for 20k miles and airbag suspension for 30k miles and I just switched back to lowering springs and upgraded the front struts because I wanted to, not because I had to. I say live for the moment, go with the 22's if you are looking for style on your car. My opinion is, if you are only going to put 20's on the car, you might as well keep your factory wheels on it. The only 20's I would go for would be factory srt wheels. Just my opinion.

I always thought I only wanted to do 20's until I got a great deal on some 22's. No regrets at all! But, you gotta get rid of the wheel gap with some coilovers or springs.

Get a nice forged rims. Why? Because a forged rim will way just about as much as the stock ones if not less. In my case, my forged rims weigh less than the steel stock wheels that came on my base. Ya know, the ones with the hubcaps. And my rims are 20's.

Alot of these "rims" shops are selling 22's with tires for $1200, why so cheap? Well, they are cheapy made and are very heavy.

Its like buying a fake Rolex, yeah you get the look, but is it worth it.

Centerline has great deals on forged rims.

Manyh people with stock 20s on their LXs are having tie rod issues, so 22s don't necessarily make it any worse. I have 22s and I will not go back to 20s. And depending on which tire you pick, the ride may be better. With Falker Ziex ST04 265/35/22, my ride quality is better than the 20" Goodyear RSAs that came with my MSRT-8.

    whats your choice?

you can run whatever, but there are consequences to either choice.

the reason he is telling you NOT to run 22's is partial because of the size, the weight, the rolling diameter, and the centrifugal rotating mass.

the size, diameter, weight and rotating mass are all factors in wear and tear on a suspension.

we all know for a fact, they will fit, they look cool (to each their own) and larger wheels decrease performance, especially past a certain point.

but regardless of if you chose cheap, or forged.... while forged does help a bit. a wheel in the 22-24-26 beyond range puts more of a strain on steering and suspensions parts.

part of that is the extra leverage in the outer diameter of the wheel combined that the lower profile a tire gets with a larger wheel...the further the weight is placed from the center which is more so the issue...

someone starting witha 215/65/17 that goes to a 265/35/22. stock diamter is 28.0 inches. the new wheel and tire diamter is 29.3 inches. only a 1.3 inch difference. barely over a half an inch difference to both sides. (0.65 inch addition radius)

but the wear and tear comes in the fact that the wider wheel, and the usually heavier tire...the weight has now been moved towards the outside of the wheel. with turning, mild to medium cornering... this WILL put more of a strain on the car that stock trim with wheels and such.

people that have big wheels will say get em....people that have reg size (plus size wheels) will say get those.

in the end, choose what you can like and can afford given something goes wrong. i didnt because of the pot holes in the philly and baltimore area... but many people live in areas with not much if even speed bumps it seems. that and i take my car to the track

overall, the end point you always can think of in terms of cars and many other things (pertains to the recommendation you recieved from your mechanic)... is the extra stress you add to a setup.... how much will it shorten the life of the system at hand.

doesnt matter if its wheels or tires, boost and nitrous, etc...

I'm seconding this. If you've a small engine (no offense), and you want big wheels, get ones that are at least close to your stock wheels in weight, if not lighter. You don't want to be adding weight to each corner. It'll just make your car seem sluggish.
