    Engine noise

Wondering if anyone has come across this......I've got only 7500 miles on my '06 but when warm and I go back to start the car on occasion I get either a chain or valvetrain/lifter type ticking noise that goes away after a minute once restarted. I've been put off by one dealer for a while now and my warranty is about to expire so I have it in another dealer and ofcourse they say they can't duplicate it. I used to be a Mercedes service writer so I know how this game goes with the techs often. Regardless at this mileage there shouldn't be a peep out of this engine...just wondering if anyone else had this or similar issue on the 2.7?

Well, I believe it is a lifter.....I even got it on video but it is intermittent and they won't do a think unless it is making the noise when I take it in. Now the car is 11 days out of warranty and while it was documented before hand and ther eis only 8,000 miles on the car I somehow doubt they will ever do anything so I may just replace the lifters myself. Last week it ticked for about 10 miles and I was on my way to the dealer but when I got there it had stopped....even with video proof they wouldn't do anything but tell me to bring it in later and they would try to verify it.

Yes, the 3 years are up. The noise was intermittent and sounded like a lifter....I even had it on video making the noise but the dealer refused to do anything claiming that the technician could not duplicate it. Funny that every time I picked up the car it would happen again. I used to be a Service writer for a Mercedes dealership so I know first hand that the tech was probably lazy and didn't likely even try. Even presenting the video to the service manager he just said "you'll have to leave it with us, we can't fix it unless we hear it" yet a week later the claim was that they didn't hear it.....

While I understand that to a point I've given up....between 2 different dealerships I am tired of the game of leaving the car for a week or two and nothing ever happening so I'll just end up doing the repair myself.

    same issue here

Mine is a 08 with 21k on it and I hear the same ticking sound. They told me that they had fixed it but after looking at the service request they put on there "could not duplicate"

Typical.....mine still does it intermittently and has since 2800 miles ....now at 12,000 miles. I just haven't had time to dig into it but I plan to just replace the lifters on the left bank since that's where the noise comes from.

This is why I despise most dealerships.....I used to be a Service Advisor for a Mercedes Benz dealership and now for the past 10 years have owned my own performance & restoration shop so I have a good idea what I am talking about when I take a car in for service. The problem is that 99% of Service writers out there have never turned a wrench in their life and the mechanics at these dealerships are parts swappers and have no idea how to do real mechanical work and diagnose/duplicate a problem so if it is not making the noise when they start it up they just write down "could not duplicate" and put it back out in the parking lot.....that is IF they even pulled it in the stall! I even had my noise on video...documented and the service manager still told me that if it didn't make the noise when they pulled it in then they couldn't fix it.....again, a nimrod being paid for a job he has no business doing. The days of people who actually fit the name "Mechanic" are long gone and good ones are few and far between. I only took mine in to the dealer because I had a warranty....should have saved my time since I'll have to do the job myself anyway but I thought that maybe I could get some decent service since the cars had made such a turnaround from the 80's quality.....

Well it sounds similar but yours sounds MUCH worse....mine is just a ticking and definitely a lifter.

I read your thread...funny thing that when I pointed this out at 2800 miles they asked me if I had been doing regular oil changes......I looked at him and said Actually I have changed the oil ONCE...after all we are talking about a car with LESS THAN 3000 MILES!!!

Unfortunately though the 2.7 apparently doesn't have the same warranty as the 3.5 because mine ended at the 3 year mark despite only having 8,000 miles on the car. They did document it but I got tired of the dealership game with leaving the car for as much as 2 weeks and telling them to drive it....I don't care if your tech takes it home or goes to Florida only to be told that could not duplicate it and then as I stop for gas on the way home it does it again!

Regardless I'll just fix it myself......

and the big 3 wonder why people don't want to buy new cars?!? I'd rather just fix an old one since their warranty is about worthless with the svc depts. just writing down "could not duplicate".

I just ordered the lifters as I'll just replace all of them on the left bank....so $132 and my time and I'll be done with it.
