    2.7 Timing Belt/Chain Service

Did a quick forum search and no joy...what is the recommended interval and what have you experieinced cost wise to change out the timing belt/chain for the 2.7L?

I'm at about 55k and think it's getting close.

    Thanks!

2.7 has a timing chain and does not have a service interval.

I had a 2001 Intrepid with the 2.7 At about 100k, my waterpump started leaking so I had it replaced. While they had the front engine cover open, I said go ahead and do the timing chain also. Total for water pump, timing chain & labor was about $1500. Now the timing chain really didn't have to be replaced, but I did it anyways. If I was you , I'd be more worried about the water pump than the timing chain. That is to say, the water pump will probably go first if it does. But then again I drove my Intrepid like Mario Andretti just about every day, so yours might last longer....

On a side note, I was using Mobil-1 10W-30 from 35k till the 100k when they opened it up. They showed me the engine, no sludge at all, looked clean!

timing chains need only to be changed if it is worn,i.e,rattling due to wear in chain and/or gears, however as we dont have the 2.7 in the UK I dont know if the chain tensioner is hydraulic or spring tensioned,if its hydraulic frequent oil changes with the correct oil should make it last, come to think of it I dont know if the hemi is hydraulic.lol, would have thought it was though

i could be wrong but when a tensioner is bolted to the outside of an engine, thats normally ratchet tensioned and if the tensioner is bolted internally its normally hydraulic

also I didnt know that the 2.7 is multi valve and OHC so it runs better at mid to top end, thats interesting to know.

You are going to pay about 750 just for the service. I had to replace the water pump on my 2.7, required taking the valve covers, timing chain off. It is very easy, let me know and I can write up directions and send them to you, very easy and saved me about $800. PM me if you have any questions

Thanks but I am a mechanical idiot so attempting this sort of repair will most likely cost me more than taking it to a good mechanic (notice I didn't say dealer!).

The first timing belt change that I did was on a 2000 Intrepid at 142,00K.The car ran fine almost 400,00ks.It took a deer to kill it.I have been told better do it sooner, rather then later.
