Experienced a new issue that I've never had problems with in the past with the MTO today.
I always suspend insurance coverage on my car from Jan to Mar every year for the past 11 years with no issues. In the spring just before the car comes back out on the road, I walk over to the MTO and pick up my plate stickers for the new year.
This year is proving to be trying. Seems like the MTO has changed their policies somewhat as they do backup checks on the policy numbers to check validity. They get their info from the Insurance Bureau of Ontario.
I wasnít aware of this until they checked my info online at the office and refused to give me a plate sticker. After a couple of calls to my insurance company, I was finally put on line with a sales agent who told me the reason they wonít give me the sticker is because my insurance is suspend for 3 months. Once my full insurance is back on, only then will the suspension be lifted and can I get the sticker.
Seeing as thereís only a week and a half left before my privileges are reinstated, I asked how much extra it would cost to reinstate them early. Turns out as itís so close to April 1st, there was no cost adjustment necessary. As of tomorrow, Iím back on the road.
Crossing my fingers that when I walk into the MTO tomorrow, there are no other issues.
Being in the systems field, you're really at the mercy of how the MTO and the Insurance Bureau of Ontario systems communicate with each other. It could be as little as an overnight data feed to update info about you at MTO, or if things are up to real time inquiry, you could be good now. (I wouldn't count on the latter) as I had an unpaid ticket and they withheld my sticker until things went through the system well after i paid my ticket.
I suspect it's no different if you were to go to a self serve kiosk to grab your sticker. When you punch in your policy# and insurance company - things have to be on the up and up, either at MTO or with the Ins Co.
Just like they check for insurance, they check for outstanding fines etc etc ...

I got my first ever letter from the MTO last January stating that they noticed my 300 didn't have any liability coverage. I called my Ins Co. inquiring about it, and was basically told the same thing you were. Just have liability portion of your policy reactivated, and you will be good to go for whatever renewals you need prior to your birthday.

A client of mine had the same issue last week. I printed him a new temporary pinkslip with "today's" date being the effective date and they didnt bother him the second time.
The systems are getting better and better with time. Soon police officers will be able to run your plate and will know if you have insurance coverage right now or not. Say my insurance gets cancelled today for non payment...my pink slips are still good for the year! and before the system is updated the police officer has no idea if the policy has been cancelled or not, if the officer is skeptical they'll usally call the ins company and find out if the policy is still in force. Soon they wont need to do that and alot of people are going to be getting 5000$ fines for driving without insurance...I know alot of people start a policy and once they get their pink slip that says their good for the year they cancel their policy...its caused alot of headaches...especially when there is a lien holder on the vehicle lol
