Husky to buy 98 gas stations in Ontario from Suncor

This could be bad those of us who are addicted to 94 octane!

CALGARY – Husky Energy Inc. (TSX: HSE) said Thursday it has signed a deal to buy 98 gas stations in Ontario from Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX: SU). Financial terms of the deal were not immediately available. The agreement includes 68 Sunoco branded stations and 30 Petro-Canada branded stations. It will increase Husky's total to 128 stations in Ontario.

Husky plans to convert the stations to the Husky banner in the second quarter of 2010.
"It represents an attractive opportunity for our shareholders and further strengthens the company's strategy of being a fully integrated oil and gas business," Husky president and chief executive John Lau said in a statement.

Suncor committed to sell the stations under an agreement with the Competition Commissioner in July as part of its merger with Petro-Canada.

Under the agreement, Suncor was required to sell 104 gas stations in southern Ontario to allay concerns that the merger would have undermined competitiveness.
Husky is an integrated energy companies with oil and natural operations in Canada, the United States, offshore Greenland and Southeast Asia.

maybe if we're lucky petrocan stations will start carrying 94. or they'll change all remaining petrocan stations to sunoco.

Here are the Husky fuel Octane ratings

    Regular - 90 Octane
    Super - 94 Octane

    Both fuels have 10% Ethanol

They will as soon as they start putting the Ethanol in, We've had 90 & 94 Octane for just about a year at our station in Alberta.

There won't be much 94 soon we knew that when they announced the merger last year. Petro Canada has no plan to sell 94 so says my Esso station owning neighbour.

Forget Sunoco gold , buy Shell V power

found this on another site , very interesting read

Shell Canada includes 10% Ethanol in the regular 'Bronze' grade 87 Octane gasoline in several provinces, including Ontario, but not Alberta.

Shell also sells 'Silver' mid-grade 89 Octane, which is blended at the retail pump from 1/2 regular, and 1/2 premium 91 Octane.

Shell 'V-Power' Premium gasoline contains NO Ethanol, so the mid-grade Silver contains 5% Ethanol

This also applies to the private labelled Shell gasoline, such as Beaver gas stations in Ontario, which is actually Shell product.

When Shell planned their move to Ethanol blended gasoline distribution, they recognized the issues with marine use of Ethanol gasoline. They now require all Shell brand Marina gasoline retailers to ONLY sell the V-Power premium 91 Octane fuel, thereby avoiding the problems of having Ethanol in the gasoline.

Ethanol contains 34% less energy per unit volume, so gasoline with 10% Ethanol will contain about 3.4% less energy than straight gasoline.

Given the benefits of not having moisture attracting Ethanol in the tank, and the protection of a couple of points more octane, I am willing to pay the price premium for Shell 91 octane V-power gasoline (or other non-Ethanol premium grade gasoline).

Ethanol also tends to wash lubricating oil from the cylinder walls, which is not a good thing for 2-stroke engines.

By contrast, Sunoco in Ontario sells Gold 94 Octane fuel, which sounds great, but contains 10% Ethanol. Ethanol adds several octane points to the underlying gasoline grade, which is how Sunoco gets that higher Octane number.

If moisture does get absorbed into Ethanol gasoline, the Ethanol becomes less soluble in the gasoline, and will settle out at the bottom of the tank. Not only is this Ethanol+water combination not combustible in the engine, the remaining gasoline sitting above this stuff in the tank has 3-4 octane LESS than it did before the moisture caused the Ethanol to drop out. So the remaining gasoline is also garbage, with an octane (for regular) of maybe 83-84.

Shell has also installed special polymer filters inside their Ethanol retail gas pumps. If the underground gas storage tank becomes contaminated with water (or water absorbed into the Ethanol), the polymer material inside these filters expands rapidly, like a baby diaper, and plugs the filter, stopping the fuel flow. This means the retailer cannot sell Ethanol gasoline that has absorbed water.

and so reminds us all to buy fuels at reputable stations. for those of us with cars that require 94 (via tuning or hardware) it may mean carrying a case of octane booster around if between stations.

Good point on the octane booster.

What is the recommended brand to use with a 94 octane tune? I've never used the stuff before and know nothing about it.

I live in winnipeg and have tried the HUSKY/MOHAWK premium(94 octane with 10% ethanol) after using shell gold. I ran the slowest time at the track using the HUSKY/MOHAWK premium. And the car ran rougher at a idle!
To figure this out, my parents own a trucking company. I own 2 myself. I went to our bulk fuel distributer to find out a little information on the quality. I told this person i am NOT looking for fuel mileage but i am looking for PERFORMANCE!
Here again, they are a HUSKY fuel station that also sell's gas along with all the diesel . He said ........
"i am shooting myself in the foot here for saying this but stay with shell"
"the ethanol is gas is NOT for performance. It does more harm then good in a engine"
This man is been around a long time. He is no spring chicken to fuels.
I am 34 and he could be my grandfather. So take it as you will, anything ethanol hinders performance no matter how they try to market it.
Ethanol is a cheap resource that creates jobs. Made to create jobs, help lower green house gasses and not for the performance minded individual. Same thing with BIO diesel. Both bio diesel and ethanol do have better lubricity. But for that you can add some lucas upper cylinder lube or what ever you choose.
But honestly, ethanol is garbage IMHO. It's to bad more and more states/provinces are requiring it.The performance minded people are a minority. So we/you loose!
So, after switching back to shell gold, the car DID run better at an idle( i should have made a video) and i ran the best time with shell at the track. This is just one persons observation/conclusion. For some weird reason maybe it may not work the same for every individual.Maybe difference in variable's could play for some different observation/conclusions.
    This is just mine.
