Unhappy I broadsided a truck yesterday

First off...not my fault and no (serious) injuries!!

We were heading out for kids soccer yesterday morning and we unfortunately met with an accident. I had my wife in the front passenger seat and both my girls in the back. I was in the right lane of a 4 lane road (2 lanes each way) in Huntington Beach when a pickup quickly pulled out of a side street into my lane. I had already noticed him there before he pulled out and as he pulled out, I quickly changed to the left lane and was in the process of calling him a jerk for pulling out. No sooner after he was pulled out, he made a hard LEFT turn to pull a u-turn across all the lanes of traffic! I started to brake, but we were already upon him. I crashed into the side of his truck doing about 30-35.

All the airbags deployed and the vehicle was filled with smoke/powder from the airbags. My daughters (8 and 10) were screaming and freaked out, but nobody was hurt. After checking the family, I went to the guy in the truck to check on him and he was fine as well. He had an older Toyota extended cab that I think had a pillar between the front and rear doors that kept me from going right into his cab.

The fire station was only about 3 houses away, so they came running over right away. They also called the police and we had 3 cop cars and 1 motorcycle officer on scene between 1 and 2 minutes! They were fast! Fortunately, the car behind me stopped to give a statement because they saw everything that happened. The older gentelman in the truck completely agreed with our stories and didn't deny anything. Evidently he was doing a u-turn to go back to a garage sale that we had just past and he wasn't paying any attention to oncoming traffic.

At a minimum, I'm going to need a new front end, fenders, hood and who knows what else. The inside will need a new dash and driver airbag. I'm sure the vehicle will be out of commission for 6 to 9 weeks.

Oh yeah, one other little detail - this was my 03 Yukon XL, not my SRT8.... Yep, the Hemi is safe! I have no real attachment to the Yukon, so I'm not that upset about it. If it had been my 300, I would have been pretty pissed.

Sorry to hear that, Jon. Another "good" thing was that the Yukon can probably take more of a beating than the 300, considering what you hit. Glad everyone was safe!!

Thanks everyone. Yeah the Yukon can definitely take more of a hit than the 300.

Sorry Noid - I figured if I was posting an accident about a non-LX vehicle that I might keep that part 'til the end.

As far as writing off the Yukon, I really hope not. Other than the front-end damage, it is perfect (loaded & low miles) and I just put new wheels & tires on it. Since the book value of SUV's is so bad, what I would get for it being totaled would barely be the down payment for something new.

Oh sure you put at the beginning how everyone is safe but leave the Yukon part till the end.

Is that the wife's vehicle or just an extra? Hope it all turns out for the better and good thing for witnesses.

glad all are safe and not injuted.

as for the Yukon.... dont be suprised if they total it. deployed airbags usually equal a write off, esp now that SUV`s are a dime a dozen. if ya get the option to buy it back, do it and then fix it as the parts are readilly available.
