To cam, or not to cam...

So... who in lovely California, who is running a cam and a tune, has passed smog?

    Anyone run into this yet?

I am considering doing a cam and tune, but next year, or so, my number's up and I just don't want to waste my time or $$$.

I'd say that as "strict" as the emissions are, as long as you're running not too rich or too lean that you'll be fine on passing smog. I've seen some pretty crappy cars pass.

Anything other than a stock tune may be caught be the smog check computer, they hook up to yours through the same data connector tuners do. Also most monitors need to be run and passed, those are self tests that the computer does while driving, you can have 2 not run and still pass. I don't know if any of the tuners mess with the monitors or self tests. I am curious also, anybody know?

I have a sidewinder cam and I believe my first Smog is due next year. Looking forward to hearing from those in Cali who have taken the test.

Afraid I'm in the same predicament. Have a Tomahawk waiting install, but mild paranoia has kept me from doing same. Well, that and a long list of higher priority projects. Would love to have that comfort level tho................

This is going to be interesting to see how this unfolds. Most of our cars are reaching the 5th year of ownership and we will have to get smog certs for those with cars registered in California. I wish I had an answer for you other than returning your car to stock for the smog check. I would be careful as I had a prior car that was not modified fail smog just because the car over time was not exactly set to factory specifications for air/fuel. I had to take my car to my mechanic at the time to adjust settings exactly to factory specifications in order to pass the smog check.

This is great news! Tell us, are you running headers or high flows? I would think that you would have to swap back your cats at least??? and find a smog center that won't have a heart attack on the visual inspection!

Was running LT's last year....will be running Kooks and cats this year.....need to get them on as I am currently running Stock 6.1 manifolds and Kooks catless mids....I was hoping to find a set of stock cats just to get through but it's getting too close to inspection time.

I passed smog in my lightning with stage IV cams on big ported heads, and HF cats rather than the stock mid pipe... passed with EASE!!!

i did get lucky and the guy didnt do a visual but said if it passes the sniffer who cares... and it passed... better than the import pickup before me...

    its all in the tune...

they only rev the car up to 3500 RPMs if you have tune thats a bit lean up until then i dont see why you cant pass with flying colors...

as long as you have no lights...

Eric, This would be great if you could do a thread on getting ready for insp and the expirence of going through! If you can get through with higher comp. and that huge cam well, Should be doable for just about anyone!
