$568.00 for a Rear Brake Job

Ok, please don't laugh at me. $568.00 for a Rear Brake Job on my 300C SRT8 at Huntington Beach Chrysler. Did I get ripped off? And if I did where should I go to save a little money. I don't have the time or the know how to do it myself.

yeah... what does "brake job" mean?

The pads are like $250 from the dealer. The rotors another $160. Those are full MSRP. But you have a 2007 so you should already have the slotted rotors that don't score and need to be replaced...

Brembo=big bucks. I think most garages/dealers in general always want to change rotors when they replace pads. I make sure the rotors don't look badly scored and are not below the minimum thickness stamped on them. The rotors on my RT went 135,000 miles and probably would have gone a lot more, but they were starting to get close to min. Dealers tend to go by the book, brakes are a safety item, they don't want to chance it. If you were driving any other Brembo equipped car, it would have been the same.

Says on the repair bill "Replaced Pads and Deglazed Rotor". Rear brake pads wore down to wear indicator.

well then... I hope they gave you a box of chocolates and flowers before they, uh... took advantage of you.

Pads are what I said. Time to change pads is what? 30 minutes? "De-glazing" rotors means they bedded the brakes. Thats 5 minutes work with another 10 for a cool-down... and all they have to do is drive the car.

I would estimate they overcharged you by $200.

Dude, for real..... youve been taken big time.

I know you said you dont have the time or the know how, but seriously, its really not that bad of a job at all. I dont know exactly where you are located or who is around you, but Im sure somebody could give you a hand if you needed it.

When they say that they "deglazed" the rotors.... I really hope that implies that they at resurfaced them with a lathe, and not just re-bed them as MR has stated.

I would definitely go elsewhere from now on. It's dealers like this that give dealers everywhere a bad name. This type of "con artistry" goes on every single day to unsuspecting people, and I don't go for it.

Honestly... I hope they didn't. The rotors shouldn't need any resurfacing unless they were scored like the old unslotted SRT rotors used to get. Only pads glaze as I understand it. If there's pad material on the rotor, you fix that by bedding it once and forgetting about it. But if there's runout (i.e. they are warped) then yeah they should either resurface them or replace them... and since they are only about $80 MSRP each its tough to find a reason not to just replace the things.

I always call 3 places for a price.
    Always!!!

One parts place gives me the best price yet the next time I still call 2 places then I call them.
Example : I needed rotors for a my wife's van and got quotes for $98-$110 each then called the 3rd place and they told me $28 !!! I said WHAT ?

Do the same for service and don't go for the BS line of "we'll have to see the car" - ask for a rough estimate and if they won't give it to you don't ever go there UNLESS someone you trust recommended them and vouch for their honesty.

You can still raise some stink with the service manager but first call 2 other dealers and see how much they charge. Otherwise lesson learned.
