In case you go with #1 edit the spelling to "Manhattan" before making them. All the ideas so far look pretty good though.

nice logo! but remember it cant say long island anymore eventhough its based out of longisland this got to be for the whole new york state since the members come from all parts of the state!

what about something along these lines?
I did it fast the font could be changed and aligned more. The whole image could be cleaned up some as well but just an idea for something a little different. Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks man. If you give me some idea of what you mean by edgier I'll try and throw something together I'm descent in photoshop and stuff. Plus after your expertise in setting up that picture I'm sure you definitely have something good in mind.
