    AZMMM Road Trip To Strawberry/Sedona

On our trip to Tortilla Flats, Junior and I discussed a road trip north. I suggested taking route 87 to Payson, continuing on to Strawberry/Pine, then taking 260 west to Cottonwood. Junior then suggested making it an overnight trip and going up to Sedona, and maybe Flagstaff.

The drive on 87 to Strawberry is just awesome. From Scottsdale to Payson you go through a desert style national forest. Then from Payson to Strawberry you go through a high country national forest with pine trees. Lots of twisties.

It would be easy enough for people to choose the 1-day trip or the overnight since 260 crosses 17. Those only interested in the day trip could head back down 17 before we hit Cottonwood, then the overnighters could head to Cottonwood/Sedona/Flag.

On Sunday we could take 40 east to Winslow and come back down 87. Maybe stop at the Meteor Crater? If we time this right we could check out Cardinals training camp in Flag.

For those that work Saturdays (CC), they could take the quick way after work (17) and meet us in Flag Saturday night.

Who wants to beat the heat and drive on some of the best roads Arizona has to offer?

Without throwing a wrench in the works, and I'm game for just about anything, but I'd love to overnight up in Strawberry/Pine. Flagstaff would be OK too though, my old stomping grounds.

I'm in, unless I can't be, but I probably can be!

If I recall, the Jerome road is TOO twisty. Like 15 MPH twisty. The drive up to Strawberry is FUN twisty.

jerome is not a 15mph road if you are willingto run it faster. i have had my truck at 35-40 though there. scared the crap out of my wife and she will not do it again. but that was in a 5000 pound truck with stock suspension. now that its lowered i would take it a little faster. your srt-4 would handle it great..........

I would NOT do the road to Jerome at 35-40!!! But it sure is a great ride and beautiful scenery. Matt and I drove it last month and he got some stunning pics. Maybe a later date we can do that one. 89A is one of the most scenic roads I've ever seen!

If I recall correctly, most of the road to Jerome is built onto the side of a mountain. So on one side if you screw up you run into jagged rock. Screw up to the other side and you plummet to your death. Plus most of the corners are blind. If you go to fast you are likely to run head on into oncoming traffic. I'd compare it to the road to Tortilla flats, but a mile up in the air. Too tight to really wring it out and enjoy.

The road to and from Strawberry, on the other hand, is mostly wide roads with room to err on either side. No blind corners. It is a much more fun road to drive, in my opinion.
