That's right folks... We made it back. Fished a new area this year. The World Famous.. Hannibal Bank! And I truely understand why this is also a GREAT spot for catching a LOT of big fish!
Usually, we fish in Pinas Bay... the spot for world record catches... but this year we heard the fishing wasn't so good there..LaNina has affected water currents and water temps.... a sharp contrast to last years' 73 billfish raised in a week!
Anyways.... We took a lot of pics but I'll only post a couple here...
When we see you all, we will tell the stories... One of which I have GOT to tell here!
We were fishing the Hannibal Bank for a couple days, my best friend (John) and I caught a couple, blues and black marlins plus a handful of sailfish..then we needed to resize the fighting chair for Diane. Lines, were out just trolling along....We sat Diane down in the chair and started adjusting the belts, and put one of the 80's (fishing rod/reel) into the chair with her so we could put some pressure on the set-up to see if Diane would be able to reach everything and reel on a big fish.
.(you can see where this is going right?)...
John was sitting...staring at the left-long lure chugging away in the water.....he wouldn't take his eye off of the entire spread, because he knew the rest of the crew was busy fitting Diane into the chair...
BLAM!!!
Like a crack of lightening the lure fell into a HUGE, GAPING mouth of a GIANT Black marlin!!! At that exact moment John screamed, "LEFT -LONG!!!"!! We all snapped our heads around in total disbelief! Then like a sureal moment, it all went into slow-motion video for me! Dad went for the HDvideo camera, I clipped on Diane's safety line, John and Tyler (first mate) went to clear the rest of the lines that were in the water.
Meanwhile, the reel screamed line off, like a pack of cats/dogs having a beat-down-drag-out-fight! Line was just peeling off.... and there was nothing we could do! Diane was locked into the chair...She just leaned back and let it happen - perfectly! Let the fish make it's initial run, and then get ready for battle! I'm constantly checking the reel, to see where we're at with the line...I start to see the "backing" - meaning about 2/3 of the line is out there....+/-800 yards!
Diane pushed the drag up to about 30 punds....really putting the heat on the fish - especially one on a full-speed run! Finally, the reel started to slow down and eventually the fish stopped taking line. Now it was time to goto work! I looked up at her and asked if she was ready... That's when she got this strange look on her face... It was this wierd evil grin...kinda like a Jack Nicholson Shining kind of Joker smile... I admit I got a litle nervous for the fish of course! Diane immediately started cranking....and cranking..... Captain Jack Plactor started backing the boat down toward the fish.... diane never quit. Never uttered a word of "help"..nothing... sheer grit and determination.... Diane was NOT giving up on this fish... then it went deep...straight down.... now we could be in some trouble..in for a loong fight.
Diane wasn't having any of that crap! She locked her legs out, leaned back into the chair, and pushed up on the drag-lever... Pushed it up to 45 pounds of drag.Captain and crew were all amazed! Not me! I know Diane is a fighter! One of her greatest assets!

That action stopped that fish right in its' tracks! It immediately changed direction...coming up!!! Diane winding and grinding on that reel like a champ! There it was! A HUGE black marlin like you might have seen in tha magazines...breaching that flat-water with its short fat bill, then continuing skyward with its FAT body 'S"-bending upward to the sky! An incredible fish for sure!
Within a few more minutes we had it to the boat...I grabbed the bill...Tyler pulled the hook, and we set it free! Another fantastic job by everyone...Especially Diane. SUPER-KUDO's to her!
With our experience and judging length and girth next to the boat we estimated the fish to be about 600.... Definitely the largest black I've ever seen..at least so far!![]()
so withour further adoooo... Here's a few pics... more a bit later....
The boat and the crew!
