Yep, you read that right. For the first time, we've been able to pull off a life webcam feed for the GIFO event! Whats more, this feed also doubles as a chat room, so you can talk with us and fellow LXers during the runs. Come hear and see exactly what's going on!
*DISCLAIMER: This is the first time I've tried something like this. If you have problems connecting, have video, sound or chat issues I will NOT be able to help you during the events. As of this moment, the available bandwidth in SVS's shop is unknown, so I do not know how many of you will be able to connect at one time; it could be 5, 50, 200 or none... I just don't know until I get up there.
Here is the proposed schedule:
Thursday - We'll be testing during the initial dyno runs all day. The server may go on and off line without notice during the day. Bear with us as we work out the kinks.
Friday - If all proves out, we'll be online and live all day Friday. Come watch as the days events unfold.
IF and this is a big IF, if there is broadband coverage at the track, I will also try and go live there as well during the evening. Again, I make no promises though... we'll just need to see how it goes.
Saturday - As stated for Friday, if all goes well, I'll try and have up the feed for some of the M&G and the track.
Bottom line on this is, its a great concept, it all checks out here in my office, and it seems like this is gonna rock. But, there is just no way to know until we get up there and get going. If you find you can't connect, we may be offline or having unfixable issues. The GIFO testing has got to come first, and we'll try to keep the feed up in our down time.
Here are the step-by-step instructions on how to get going. I don't expect to have the server up until 11ish PST Thursday morning, so you may want to get this prep done between now and then.
****Video Client Install Instructions****
Step 1: Find the CamFrog client software
You need to download the “CamFrog Video Chat” client from Download.com. You can also click here for a direct link.
Step 2: Download the client
Click the “Download Now” link. You should get a pop up window that looks like this:
I typically just click “Run”, as I don’t care about saving the install file itself. You can however click “Save”, but you then need to specify a location to save to, and then when done, you’ll need to double click that installation file to proceed.
Step 3: Install the client
After the download has completed I get the following message:
You may or may not get this. It depends on your security settings. If you do get it, click “Run” to continue
After this, the wizard takes over. You can just accept the defaults or customize it as you see fit. Just keep proceeding until finally the application has been installed.
Step 4: Running the client
If at the end of the install wizard you elected to run the app, you’re good to go. If not, find the app in Start->All Programs->CamFrog Video Chat v3.71 (your version may vary).
Either way, you should now see this screen:
Here is where you create your nickname. You can choose anything you want, but it might make the most sense to use the same name you’re known by on the forums.
Fill in all the fields and click Submit
Next, you’ll be asked to create a profile.
Fill in any info you want, remembering you need to fill in all * fields at a minimum. If the username you’ve asked for is available, you’ll get a confirmation message congratulating you. If not, you’ll be looped back to select another.
Step 5: Connect to the GIFO!
Now, with the client window up and you logged in, select the Actions menu and then select “Connect to Video Chat Room…”
In the pop up window, type “GIFO4”. This is the name of the video chat room we’ve set up. Now click OK.
If all goes well, you should now have up the main chat window. You’ll notice you’re being prompted for a password. Click Yes to agree, and then type “lxforums” down in the chat area.
Now click the Send button.
If everything works right, you’ll now be in the room!
One thing to note here. Since you’ve installed the free version of this client, the video window size is on the small end. If you were to pay the one time (lifetime) $50 fee and upgrade to the Pro version, you’d be able to open a window this size:
That’s it! Feel free to chat it up. We’d love to hear your comments and game time commentary. I think LadyNilla will be manning this post, so be nice or she'll kick your butt outta there![]()
