Howdy folks,,, has anyone installed a Start button?,, I think they come out in the Vipers, SRT10's and such. Is there a how to anywhere?.
I searched but had no luck with my search terms, or it came back with 11 pages,,, if we could do a search by start AND button,,,

    Sorry, wrong forum, noticed after.

Nope. Problem is the car needs to see the actual key for the SKREEM system. Once it's in the ignition for that, why not just turn it??? If you could completely bypass the SKREEM then it'd be a very simple mod (just two wires out of the ignition switch).

Well, that makes me wanna SCREAM,,, .
So the key would still be in the ignition, I don't mind. I could install the start button somewhere, console, dash, wherever I wanted, and push da button?,, just 2 wires?, nobodies done this?, hmmmm, sounds like a why not do it?.

"why not just turn it?",,, why do I want a START button, why not?, why did they put them in the Vipers, SRT10's and such? Looks cool, functionality enhancement?, nope.

There's a way to dummy this up without the key... Buy the Mopar remote start unit and put a button on the dash. You'll have to push it twice but that'd work.

Of course, its a lot more fun to be able to start the car from a distance so if it were me (and I did this) I'd just take the remote start, put it on my keychain and NEVER use the key (or Start button) ever.

I'm with ya, I'd like to see one but I'd want it in conjunction with a smart key system that unlocked the doors and allowed the car to be turned on just by having the car inside. **sews mouth shut** But yeah, the ignition has five wires...

2 that are the SKREEM "key sense" circuit, one that is constant fused power, one to turn the car "on" (a.k.a. Accesory, run, whatever), and one for start. So you'd have to grab +12V from somewhere and run that to your new button switch, then from the other lead on the switch run back to that fifth "start" wire. As long as it was a momentary switch you should be fine, unless maybe you had to add a resistor like you do for the hatch popper on the magnum. but you'd still need the key in the ignition so the car knew it was legit, and you'd still have to turn the key one click to the "on" position. I guess if you really wanted to, you could use a SPST toggle switch or something to perform that function as well. Then you'd just throw your key in the slot, flip a toggle, and push a button. Seems like a lotta work for a button :-P

What I'd like to see is a SKREEM bypass, like some alarms use, that can be operated off of a switch. But for that switch I would want to have a 10-button keypad a la the Transporter. It's so simple in theory, but so damn hard to create apparently.

You mean 3M the remote to the dash, right? The remote start brain doesn't have an input for any kind of switch. I wonder if you could trick it into being in a perpetual state of "run" (the remote start brain, that is) so that it used its SKREEM antenna to lie to the car about the key while you drove.

No, I figure someone is smart enough to fab something up so you have a button on the dash... you'd just have to press it twice.

I would set the car up with remote start and use a second remote inside as a start button even disassemble it and make it look like a high end start button...

If i remember correctly, and i may be wrong dont have my car or manual with me in Korea, i think my viper 791xv has a wire i can ground to start the car. If that is the case i could put a button in and just have it go to ground, but still have to put key in.

There are two things here, IIRC, to make stuff work:

    a) the RFID in the fob needs to be close enough to make the ECM think there is a valid key in the ignition. You can get RFID chips that you can program to the ECM (i.e. a chip separate from a key) - the issue is one of range. If you bolt it in to your dash, then you've removed all of the security features that you get from having a chipped key in the first place.

    b) you still need something to do the "off/acc/on" positions of the key. Adding a pushbutton start is easy after that.

Does anyone have the schematics or logical flow of how it works in a pushbutton start vehicle? If so, we can reverse engineer quickly and easily.

I'd love a larger proximity on my chipped key and a start button...

(I have a moderate background in EE, so electronics is easy enough to figure out once we have the proper info).

I'm wondering is something like a fingerprint reader could be set up to either of those functions. Yeah it's involved, but unless somebody had your finger, it would be good security. I would think that using something like that would be best suited to handle item "a)" simply as it could also be used as your "key" to unlock the car. Replace the keyhole with a fingerprint scanner.

    Just dreaming.....
