Mods Face Off Result: Roto-Fab Intake

Mods Face Off Result: Roto-Fab Intake

I took a totally unofficial and unscientific poll during the event. I asked folks, if they were in the market which of those we're testing would they choose, and why? Overwhelmingly the Roto-Fab was the choice, and the reasons given included fit & finish, ease of install and maintenance, power sound and looks. Its plainly obvious that Roto-Fab did their homework with this kit, and the results speak for themselves.

    Mod Tested: Roto-Fab Intake
    Date: 12/4/08 - 12/5/08
Dyno Location: SVS R&D, Sacramento CA
Track Location: Sacramento Raceway, Sacramento CA <---CANCELED DUE TO FOG.

***Remember to always review and keep in mind the Mods Face Off Testing Methodology Q&A while reviewing these results.***

    The Good:
    • Top notch construction. As you can see in the pictures in the following posts, this kit is first rate. It comes well boxed and packaged, and consists of everything you need to install it except basic hand tools. The instructions are clear and concise, complete with full color pictures. Roto-Fab even includes a blowup of the intake to help connect the dots should you need more than the excellent instructions provide.
    • In terms of quality of components and build, this kit is among the best I've seen to date.
    • The unofficial crowd favorite. This kit is the choice of many who attended the MFO6
    • On a stock SRT8, the Roto-Fab averaged 6 peak hp and 3 peak torque. On a lightly modified 5.7 it average 7 peak hp.
    The Bad:
    • On a lightly modified SRT8 running an AFE Stage 2 kit for the baseline, the Roto-Fab dropped 8 peak hp and 8 peak torque. This was the biggest loss we saw on this car.
    The Numbers:

    The Graphs:
Here is the Roto-Fab plotted against the baseline
Baseline is in blue, Roto-Fab is in red

    COMPARISONS:
The Roto-Fab is in dark teal:

    The Roto-Fab is in pink:

    COMMENTS:
I've said it before, but its worth repeating: the Roto-Fab kit is one of the best we've seen. In every way it exudes its professionalism and quality. The install team commented more than a few times on how well everything fit. The observers commented more than a few times on how good it looks and sounds. And while it gave up quite a bit in terms of performance to the AFE, I think its still worth a look if you feel its all plastic construction will serve you better in terms of heat dissipation and protection.

Click any of the pics for MUCH larger and up close versions. Be warned... clicking will NOT be 56k friendly.

This unit comes well packaged. Nothing moved around in the box. It was all held secure by the paper.

    With the paper removed.

The heat shield and stripping removed from its bag.

Closeups of the heat shield/airbox. This is a solid formed piece of thick walled plastic. Also notice the stripping designed to seal against the hood is already installed. This is the first time I've seen it come preinstalled.

That extra hole in the top of the picture looks inspired by the SRT box, but I'm just guessing on that.

    Thats a familiar shape...

Sure enough. That 'horn' shape is the same shared by the AirHammer and AFE Stage II, the only two intakes to show any gain at any MFO test.

That plastic nipple is threaded into a brass fitting.

Again notice how the connecting tubing and hose clamps are already installed. These guys go thru a lot of prep, so you don't have to.

Here's just about the only question I have of this kit. That's a pretty small filter, measuring in at approx 8in in length overall, and 5.75in inner diameter at the mouth. That size is required to fit in the airbox, but we've seen in the past that bigger means better in terms of pure performance. Will this smallish filter hurt? Or will the protection from engine bay heat offset any negatives the smaller filter might introduce?

    And the paperwork

Be sure to check in with the MFO6 thread by clicking here to learn all about what we're doing here, and for our future plans for testing this intake.

I'll update this thread as results are derived at the coming MFO6!

I know you guys have a TON of MOFO information to digest, but I for one am VERY anxious to see the official word on the Roto-Fab!

I think pretty much everyone with a 'sealed' box - except for a stock RT - has a second hole to let air in from the front. SRT, Volant, C&L etc. Heavy breathers need more air than that hole can supply.

That's correct, the extra hole takes advantage of the factory air feed hole in the fendr to allow more air to reach the filter

It is, but its enough to keep a low pressure area from forming. You don't need a scoop or anything like that to draw air in.

I have to say this unit seemed the most polished of the bunch. I installed it on one of the test vehicles and it took about 10 seconds. Literally. Just fit right into place.

Ditto that. Couldn't have fit better.

Also, there's a coupler in between the filter and the tube, so you can remove either or both without loosening the box.

It was the crowd favorite for sure. I took an unofficial poll during the event, asking "which would you choose?" Hands down this unit was the choice, its fit finish and look for the pricepoint, being the big reason why. You guys have really knocked this one out of the park.

I'll get to the specific results as I have time. Real busy week for me so I apologize for the delay. Hopefully all will be detailed by this weekend.

Thanks again to Roto-Fab and Ed of Late Model Speed for their unquestioning support of the MFO6. Hats off to you guys.

No problem Jason, I completely understand. I can't believe the amount of work that you guys put into the MOFO events.

It really means alot to us and the guys at Roto-Fab to see the approval of your group, believe me, that carries a TON of weight with us!

    Thank you,

Something that I don't think the guys were able to test was hot vs. cold air due to the temps at the time of testing. Tracy and I were probably the first two to go with the Roto-Fab and we got them when it temps were still pretty warm out and are FIRM believers in the cold air theory now. The dang things just sound incredible too...especially hers with the Ram Air (I know she has to hear it howl at least once a day). On hers I was able to get an uncut box from the guys so I could custom cut it to seal to the Ram-Air. I am looking at using the lower port hole as a induction on mine...which is very possible with the design.

And they couldn't be more dead on about installation, was the most enjoyable install I have ever done. Takes longer to fill up the tank!

IMO Best bang for your buck when you consider the product, performance, ease of install and most of all the guys that sell it...What a great crew these guys are
