Mods Face Off Result: Frankentake III

Mods Face Off Result: Frankentake III

This test consisted of testing the do it yourself Frankentake III Intake on a completely stock 2005 300C and an extensively modified 2005 300C at the Mods Face Off 5 (MFO5).

    Mod Tested: Frankentake III
    Date: 10/12/06 - 10/13/06
Dyno Location: SVS R&D, Sacramento CA
Track Location: Sacramento Raceway, Sacramento CA

***Remember to always review and keep in mind the Mods Face Off Testing Methodology Q&A while reviewing these results.***

    The Good:
    • Its cheep. For right around $100 you can build this puppy yourself.
    • Just sounds mean. It rated #2 in sound right behind the AirHammer.
    • Although max outputs didn't improve on the modified 5.7, the torque and hp curves climb faster with the Frankentake than they do with the baseline intake. This should equate directly to 1/4 mile times.
    • Its cheep!
    The Bad:
    • Performance wise, its a wash from stock; and in fact might slightly hurt the power curves.
    The Numbers:

    The Graphs:

These two pulls closely follow the averages for the entire set. This is average vs average, not worst vs best.

    COMPARISONS:

Intake STP Horsepower Comparison - Stock 5.7L

Intake STP Torque Comparison - Stock 5.7L

Intake STP Horsepower Comparison - Modded 5.7

Intake STP Torque Comparison - Modded 5.7

I'm still convinced that it can do things depending on vehicle configuration. Remember it more or less matched a K&N Typhoon on the dyno when we did the pre-MFO dyno'ing on my car, back before cam and heads went in. We didn't test that combo at MFO itself but it was the same dyno, operator, 5-minute lag between runs and the temp was within a few degrees (don't remember the baro). And when we did baselines on Monday at MFO we found that CV's souped-up K&N AirCharger was robbing his car of roughly 10 hp when we took F3 off and put his intake on my car (which really just says something about the other product and not the F3, but *still*...).

Xcelr8r was working on this exact mod... There was a group brainstorming session in the control room at SVS and he was really on his game. I hope he doesn't mind me giving it away:

Traffic cones. Big red ones. They're literally just laying around all over the place.

My improvement to this wonderful concept was to saw a hole in the grille and run the thing right out the front for true ram air.

We would have had more great ideas but with all of the gasping and choking going on in the room we sort of lost our edge.

Seriously... I think you could do it but you would need considerable metalworking skill. Not only that, but the Rev. didn't just glue a traffic cone onto a silicone elbow. From what I hear he worked pretty hard to get the measurements right.

Frankentake's goal was to be something anyone can fab up in their spare time with a few parts that you get off the internet. IF you can continue in that vein then I say go for it, and share what you learn.

Thanks Matt/CV for all your hard work on the Frankentake III. With the information you and others have provided, I'm constructing my own intake system. I'm glad Air Flow Systems is in my neighborhood.
It looks like 2012 will be very good indeed.
Unless the Mayans are right, then, well, never mind.

    Matt-
I STILL Love my Frankentake!! And for the price?- you can't be beat!! This intake has ALWAYS been intended for the "do-it-yer' self" guy out there! Claims of HP gains have never been used to "sell" this intake! Like I said...it has ALWAYS been pushed as a competitor to the "off-the-shelf" products out there... I STILL say, I'd rather support a fellow LX-loving member - no matter who it is- versus tossing my money at some clown/business that is only interested in taking my money.

    Just my 2c.

Yes, the F III was a great effort, and if it matches K&N, and helped with the Mods Face Off 5, who can argue with that? I will be installing mine shortly and will see how it helps me in this tropical climate.
