Sayonara!
Take care.
one island to another...
I am moving to Sasebo in Kyushu not far from Nagasaki.
Good luck...why are you leaving that great place?
Umm, yeah, Hawaii is a great place to visit but not live. Everything is too damn expensive, the roads suck, and sorry Coyote but, the cops only do their job when it means money for the state. Pulling someone over and giving them a ticket because their wheels are more than two inches over stock is just stupid. Did they ever stop to consider that when people run bigger wheels that they also run lower profile tires so the overall diameter of the wheel hasn't changed. How is that a safety concern. Its amazing how my car can be street legal in the other 49 states but because its in Hawaii, I guess there is a fairy waving a wand or something that makes my car illegal. Hawaii's recon laws are nothing more than a revenue generator for the state. Get rid of recon and charge a usage tax at the airport or something. Ask yourself this, why do the local cops have to rely on someone like "The Dog" to do their job for them? Its simple, they won't get any money for arresting the bail jumpers. Now find a nice car with some big wheels and a body kit and holy hell we better get that criminal. Pull him over quick and start writing the tickets. Because those big wheel, body kit, car drivers are the real danger to the society. Give me a break. The people in Hawaii are great but I have no love for the state government or local police force. Someone tried to steal my car at Makapu by jamming a screw driver into the key slot. The cop shows up and never even dusts for fingerprints. When I ask him about it, the first thing he says is "Hey brah, you have insurance don't you?" WTF difference does it make if I have insurance or not. Do you damn job and try to get some of these losers off the street. Oh yeah, can't do that because you all related yeah. Oh yeah, I am always reading in the newspaper about all the bench warrants that go unpaid in Hawaii due to lack of personnel to serve them. How is it that the cops have time to sit by the construction crews all night but can't serve these warrants. So I am glad to be leaving. Wish I could have left sooner. Okay done venting

Yeah but unlike the riceburners in the US, they are fast as all heck. If your not pushing at least 700hp to the wheels at the races in Japan, don't even waste your time. Its completely different over there compared to the idiots you see in the US. But yeah it will be fun none the less.
Fergy, was great meeting and knowing ya. Good luck over there! But, be prepared, vehicle registration is valued on the cubic inches of your vehicle. 1/2 Ton F150 w/ 5.3L all said and done is a few grand to register after inspections. (friend just moved here from japan).
Nice place to visit... definately don't live here. I'm counting down to moving off island.
As an aside to what Fergy mentioned about vehicle laws... Recon.
Recon (only county in hawaii, and only state in country) where you have to get a totally separate paid inspection (except if you're local - good old boy effect) to be able to drive on the roads if you have a modified vehicle. All the time I see lifted/lowered cars/trucks riding around clearly violating the recon law (no tread outside fenders, bumper height, mud flaps, plate covers, taillight covers, etc etc) that don't have recon stickers, and aren't getting pulled. Take a look in the drivers window and they're local.
This is on top of getting the regular paid safety inspection.
Roads are the worst I've driven in the 12 states I've lived in, construction projects that take 9 months mainland, take 2.5 years here.
The island (oahu) has 1 major thoroughfare west/east. There was an accident where the army was transporting a crane (wasn't fully tucked) and hit an overhead pedestrian bridge. 12 HOUR BACKUPS to go 5 miles. Exacerbating the situation was that it was rush hour.
Rush hour... 0530-0900 west to east (7 lanes @ 20 MPH mabye), 1500-1900 (7 lanes @ 20 MPH if that.. usually parking lot). Alot people live on the west side of the island where it's less expensive to live (rent averages $1800 on that side, vs. $2400 for the east side; also easier to get an actual house vs. condo) and work downtown (east side) of the island. Exacerbating the situation, 2 of the largest employers (Pearl harbor naval shipyard) and Pearl harbor base/Hickam Air Force Base are on that route, while alot of military housing is west in Ewa Beach, Iroquois point, etc.
Highways...(yes, we have interstates (only way to get federal funding to build em)). H1 west -> east... 7 lanes to 5 lanes to 2 !!!! lanes and a 35MPH curve in the dead center of it, then opens back up to 5ish lanes. The designers were on crack. There are entrances that are full of people entering, and 1/8 mile after it there's an offramp where alot of people get off to go to work (Vineyard, anyone?). Another example of idiocy.
Sorry for the diatribe.
/rant off
Weather.. the cat's ass... fantastic. 12 months of riding weather.
People... again, wonderful. Everyone's great.
Food... superb. Kalua pig, zippy's chili, shave ice, yeaahhhh.

What citizenship are you, if you don't mind me asking?
You need Japanese citizenship to get a job there, right?
How are you gonna make a living?
Are you from there originally?
If you're a US citizen, you should move to Las Vegas, a lot of people from hawaii do that, it's cool here, pretty free, do what the hell you want on your car, won't get pulled over or harrassed.
Japan is cool technologywise.
Sorry about the questions, no I'm not INS, just wondering what laws they have ther regarding work for non-citizens.
Good Luck, Im trying to get a Job in Tokyo... ^^
