HONOLULU -- Honolulu police have issued more than 3,700 speeding and other citations in the first three weeks of a highly publicized crackdown on dangerous drivers.
The tickets are part of a campaign to cut down on speeding-related accidents and deaths, which are at the highest levels in recent years.
The effort is on top of regular traffic enforcement efforts.
About 2,700 speeding tickets and 463 warnings were handed out. Police also made 186 arrests including 54 for drunken driving.
So far this year 87 people have died in traffic accidents on Oahu. That's already up from last year when 75 people died.
