Write the check, it's possible. Nothing preventing it other than money. Will require work to the tunnel, and creative routing of a hydraulic clutch hose. Trans will bolt in w/ a new driveshaft. I expect to be into it for around $8,000 when I do it - that's the only reason it isn't already done.

At a minimum you're looking at a 3" hole for the shifter...

Yes, but it's a ways down. Before you can swap the trans you have to go to a much larger gear ratio - 3.73 minimum, 3.92 mo' betta' - in the rear end. I had a 3.55, but I don't anymore (long painful story) so I need to revisit the back of the car first. That's why Keisler abandoned the project, there were no gears available at the time and they kept burning clutches.

i f chrysler wants to make any sales to the motorheads like us, then yes there should be the option of manual in all next LX vehicles.

I did a T56 conversion on my Impala SS, so while I don't have specific info pertaining to the LX platform, I can offer some general observations.
The tunnel is probably not the problem. The T56 is neither large nor awkward, so any tunnel mods are likely to be minor (well, other than making a hole for the shifter tower). Use of the reverse lockout solenoid and skip-shift solenoid may require some additional clearancing in the area surrounding the shifter cutout.
What sucks is fabricating a usable pedal assembly. In the case of the B-body, it was never sold with a third pedal, so I used some 4th-gen F-body parts and mixed 'em up with the B-body stuff.
As someone mentioned, gearing is also an issue with the T56 - the lack of a torque converter requires deeper gearing. I used a transmission from the Chevy SSR, which comes with a 2.97:1 first gear. This combined with 25.5" tires and 3.73 axle gears to provide a usable setup, but 4.10s out back would have been better with my relatively peaky engine.
I'm assuming that you're not talking about a new G8 GXP, as they're done. Used ones may be difficult to come by, as maybe 50% or so of the ~1800 total GXPs were of the row-your-own variety.
