    tire sizes, what's the deal?

Okay guys I was wondering why the tires are so skinny on the Challenger. It kinda bugs me. I mean, all performance draw backs aside when I look at a Challenger the last thing I want to see is skinny tires. It's a muscle car. What are the widest rims and tires that can fit the car? It kind of seems weird to me that even Hennessey is only selling 9.5" wide rear rims for cars that are supposedly over 700hp.

It's not so much that the tires are skinny. They are just very tall and on a big car. A 245mm tire on a '70 Challenger does not look skinny.

As for what fits...all depends on the wheel width and offset. Also depends on whether you want to keep the tires inside the fender, or if you want the tires to stick out (the automotive equivalent of the mullet if you ask me).

Well I was thinking of selling the stock 20s and getting some Torque Thrust IIs, black with a chrome lip. I wanted to get the BFGoodrich G-Force KDW 2s aswell. The only thing is that I can't put the G-Forces on there unless I go 255 tires and I didn't know if they would fit the car. I can get the rims custom offset so I need to know what I can do to make the tires fit. I want them to sit inside the fender do I don't know what I can do.

Thanks! I would like the BFGoodrich G-Force KDWs and as for size I would probably go with 265/45/20 if I can get them.

Can't you just put on 275/40/20 like the other LX's are running. I have 275/40 all the way around and they work just fine. Same wheels as yours pretty much, just 300 srt8 rims.

hmmmmm. I would like the tires to be the same width all the way around. I don't like being unable to rotate them.

correct me.....but aren't chally wheels 20x8 , i thought you can only get a 255 width to work on that width of rim. 20x9 could accomodate a 275 i think, but at its limits.

20x9 is what im actually looking at from aftermaket rims so they will fit.

The tire manufacturer usually has a recommended range of wheel widths. For example, a 255/45/20 might recommend 20x8-20x9.5

SRT wheels up to this point have all been 20x9. I don't think the Challengers are any different.

    I don't think anyone makes a 265/45/20

The 275/40/20 is generally the way people are going to go wide. On an SRT you can do it front and back. Its tough to do that on a non-SRT in the front without *exactly* the right offset (assuming you don't screw up and go outside of or into the fenders). The SRT has a different steering knuckle that can accommodate the wider 275 width on stock wheels.

The dead-safe all-around max width is 255/45/20 for all SRT's and RT's using stock SRT and R&T wheels.

The proper stock size for the front on an SRT is 245/45/20. Which happens to be the exact diameter match for the 275/40/20.
