    Mustang to run Nationwide series

Ford Motor Company announced today that it will field the Ford Mustang in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, beginning with a limited rollout of the series’ new car in 2010. The Mustang is a legendary make in drag racing, road racing and drifting, but it has never competed in any modern-era NASCAR-sanctioned series.

Brian Wolfe, Director of Ford North America Motorsports, made the announcement today, saying, “We're excited about Mustang coming to NASCAR. It's the most successful product nameplate in racing history, and it seems only right that it should be coming to the most popular form of racing in North America. We had been talking with NASCAR for some time about Mustang as part of its vision for a 'muscle car' rollout for the Nationwide Series. We both saw it as a way of differentiating the series from Sprint Cup. We loved the idea, so we jumped on the chance to extend Mustang's racing legacy to a new series reaching a huge and loyal audience.”

Ford Racing Communications Manager Kevin Kennedy told Sirius Speedway Tuesday that the new NASCAR Mustang will be more stock-appearing than the Sprint Cup Ford Fusion, adding that the appearance of the car was at the top of FoMoCo’s wish list. While declining to comment on the direction Chevrolet, Dodge and Toyota might make with their versions of the new Nationwide car, Kennedy confirmed that NASCAR would like to make the series a pony-car/musclecar-based platform.

I hope this means that the Challenger is going to be announced soon. Chrysler cant back away from this.

how do the stock cars of today have anything to do with the decals on their body?
sure the dodge car has a Charger or Stratus painted on the body... but ... thats about all they have in common right?

wont this be the same deal?

i mean, its not actually using a mustang body even... just the concept? bleh

Dude... I was thinking the same thing... unless they come up with a series that uses the actual body... it's basically just a decal change and a different engine.

I would love to see a series where the mustang, camaro, and challenger duke it out on road courses across the country.

Or even for someone to develop a challenger to compete in a series like the speed world GT or Koni GT.

Ask, and ye shall receive! http://www.americanironracing.com/

Now we just need to get some Challengers and LX's in there!

I'm doing my part- I'll be running the Charger in another PDX (non-competitive Track Day) at Mid Ohio Road Course on Friday!

Well Ford has announced the real deal today. I think they did a good job at making it look more like a mustang. Now can we get a Challenger out of any of the Nationwide teams (Pensky)

Something tells me the Challenger will look terrible after it gets the jellybean treatment. I can only imagine how bad the front end will be messed up to make it slippery.

ya they will have to pull the grill out flush with the front end to get any speed out of it. I find the front end gets a little wobbily at 180 to 240kmph.

    What's that in "real"?

I've hit 150mph twice now and mine felt pretty good. Hell, the second time was with the front sway bar removed (got lazy and left it off from the last drag event).
