    Strange tick coming from engine?

    Hey all,

I've been a member for some time now but have not really posted. Anyway, I need help. I took my car to the dealership with a strange ticking noise almost like a blown engine. Well long story short after bout a week and a half they say they have to replace the rocker arms on left side. OK. Now I've had the car back for about 3 days and now I notice a new sound. The car makes a strange loud tick or click when running and after running. The sound is not like the car is settling after being in motion it's like someone taking a hammer and tapping on a hollow metal container. I've tried to have the car tick on demand but I cannot. I've not yet taken the car back to the dealership or to another mechanic. I am looking for any suggestions as to what you guys think it may be.

    Thanks in advance.

First, welcome from Maine. Sorry your first post is on a bad note. The sound that you hear after the car is shut off, maybe exhaust cooling and contracting? I would definately run it by the dealer, if nothing more than to document it. I believe if you have a complaint documented and it actually fails after the warantee runs out, you still are covered. I have 94,000 miles on my RT Magnum and the few problems have been taken care of by an outstanding dealer, hope your dealer treats you as well. You might pm Funky Chicken about that sound, never heard anyone post about that before.

Mine makes all kinds of clicks and tinks when heating up and cooling down. Other car's I've owned have done the same. It's aluminum parts expanding and contracting. Normal.

I hear what you're saying ZMAGNUM, but this isn't like the other normal noises I've heard since owning this car this is a distinct tap like a part is loose and hitting something it shouldn't be, and it just started after having the car serviced by the dealer so I'm gonna take it down to another dealership just to be safe. Hopefully things work out and it's nothing.

Sounds like a good idea. New noises are not good.

Well sorry to have held everyone in suspense, but the mystery of the after shutting off the engine tick has been solved. After $400 spent at the stealership (saw this somewhere thought I'd borrow it) and having them tell me several times that it was "normal", that it was the catalytic converter giving off heat. I couldn't take it any longer I took it to the best mechanic I could find and lo and behold somehow there was a loosened bolt in or around the heat shield on the left side. How the bolt was loosened I don't know but what I do know is that it was not loose until the dealership "fixed" the other problem.

So if anyone is in SoCal, Inland Empire I advise to stay away from Frahm Dodge in Norco. Their service department is awful especially SKI, he will not call when he says he will and tries to hurry you through and at least in my experience doesn't always get every detail of the problem.
