    New engine noise. Now what?

My 3.5L is making a new sound that I've not heard before. It sounds like I have a supercharger but since I don't actually have one that's not good. The sound increases with throttle. It seems to be coming from the front upper part like the intake manafold area where the secondary runner actuator valves are located. I disconnected the wires on the valve controls one at a time and there was no change in sound. There are no codes (no MIL).

This all seems to have started after I washed the engine this past weekend. I've done the engine wash thing many times in the past and never had any issues so it may not have anything to do with the sound I'm hearing. By now all the water is gone anyway since I've had it up to full operating temp serveral times driving around town.

I'm taking it to the dealership this Saturday for an oil change. I'll have them take a listen to it. I'm out of my b to b warranty but still have my drivetrain warranty with the $100 deductable.

    I sure hope it's nothing.

Anyone have this kind of sound/issue on the 3.5L V6?

    That's it.

In the past I've heard this type of sound when the alternator was going bad but this sound seems to be higher up than that.

That makes me feel a little bit better. But then you have a 2.7L, right? Some different components in there.

Could be sepentine belt, or tension idler or alternator whine. You could try the old soap on the sepentine trick to eliminate the belt as the problem.

It seems like it's higher up than the alternator and belt.

What is that soap trick though?

It doesn't sound like a power steering pump, does it?

I suppose it could be but isn't that down low?

Yeah, that's true. It should be down a little lower. I always though that sound was organic to all Dodge V6's though. My grandparents used to have an Intrepid that whined like that. My SXT Mag has that same buzz too.

Well hopefully it's normal but why would it suddenly get louder?

The engine performs just fine. No change there.

That is odd, isn't it? Too bad we don't live closer. I'd love to take a look at that.
It doesn't cause the car to feel different or anything, does it?

    No. Feels the same.

I can hear this new noise if I drive next to a wall with the window down.
