    Fuse #17

Just wanted to know if anyone else has pulled good 'ol #17 to disable the ESP. I did it this past weekend and didnt really notice a difference. I did expect to see that the abs light and another light would come on, but my emergency brake light stayed on too. I drove for a lil bit just to see if it was the light or if the brake had actually engaged and it didnt feel any different, but I didnt want to chance it for too long, so I quickly returned the fuse to rightful resting place. Has anyone tried this?

Just a quick note on the fuse 17 mod. I ran mine at a local autocross for fun. First I ran it with the fuse removed and shifted the trans manually. It really did not respond well to sudden changes in direction. I made 2 runs with it this way. Then I reinstalled the fuse and let the trans shift on its own. With the fuse intalled the turn in was a lot better and the car seemed to want to change directions better. On the 4th run I shifted the car with the autostick. It will not let you hold the car in 1st gear. It will shift automatically when it hits redline (no overrevving allowed here). I was able to downshift to 1st when needed but again it shifted to 2nd gear on its own. Oh, the ABS does not like left foot braking at all. This causes total confusion. Better to brake in a straight line, turn in and let the ESP sort it out and then power out. My last run (we had 5 runs) was 2.5 seconds faster than the my first run with the total manual control. Just so you'll know I am not new to autocrossing/Solo2 Events. I have 25 years experience so I am not a noobie. Another thing, you cannot do a power brake burnout with the ESP engaged. It will shut the car down until you stop trying to do it. The ECU see the cars rear wheels moving and not the fronts and says 'NO'!

What did I learn? A)Throttle by wire is not very useful in a competition mode of this type. The throttle is fairly slow to respond.B) This is a really competent street car that is entirely capable of keeping everyone out of trouble in a dangerous manuever, ESP or not. I personally see no reason not use it (the ESP). It makes a rather large powerful car predictable.C) I now appreciate my Solo2 Street prepared Honda Civic and what it can do that much more.D) I now know what to expect of the Magnum as a daily street driver.

This is a great street car that would benefit immensley from a good programmer, better shocks and bigger swaybars. All of these things are on there way from different manufacturers so we can all be happy for that. As far as the GSM mod for the ESP, I am going to hold out for the SuperChips programmer as anything else will be a 'BandAid' for the real deal.

People who use there cars for trackday events may have a different evaluation. And of course I was not using racerubber but the stock Contis that came on the car. Either way it was a fun, realworld experience and the car got a lot of attention.

We don't need no stinking ESP on an SE.

Hurse, I have not pulled the fuse. I've been thinking of trying it once to see if I can do a burnout, but for no other reason than that.

If you can solve your problem, then what is the need of worrying? If you cannot solve it, then what is the use of worrying?

ESP only gives you headaches by limiting torque.

I notice a considerable difference between having ESP on and off in terms of acceleration. With it off, it accelerates quickly and forcefully, with it on, it doesn't try. When it comes to handeling though, it makes a huge difference in making the car managable when its On. Since the car is so big, it likes to let its rear drag around when ESP is off, with it on, its fairly nimble.
