    Question Which Chip For Me?

OK, after reading a majority of the posts concerning JET chips here and on ChargerForums.com, I must say that I am thoroughly confused. I don't know what I really need, so I am turning to you guys and gals for help. I sent the following questions to JET, and I am awaiting their reply. In the mean time, I thought that I would post my questions here. I'm pretty sure I can get better, more unbiased opinions and answers here than from JET.

I am considering purchasing a JET chip for my SXT. However, I'm not 100% sure which chip I should purchase. Currently, the only modification that I have is the MOPAR dual cat-back exhaust. While this system is not a "true dual" setup (i.e., it has a dual outlet off of the single muffler), I am planning on removing the single 1-in-2-out muffler with 2 high-flow performance mufflers and make the system a "true dual" system. I will probably add headers later on if/when they are offered. I will also be installing an aftermarket intake. Whether I will go with a full setup or simply a high-flow drop-in filter has yet to be determined.

All that said, I want to ensure that I am getting the most out of my modifications. I want to increase performance and efficiency. I put over 300 miles per week on my car, so fuel efficiency is very important to me. Also, I'd rather not have to purchase 91 octane fuel all the time.

So, which chip would be the best for me based on my current (and planned) modifications? Are the mods that I have listed considered "mild" or "radical"? Can I still use the Stage I chip with all of the modifications that I have listed? Or, do I need to go with the Stage II chip and theromostat?

And that brings up a whole other line of questions. If I do go with the Stage II, do I really need to replace the thermostat? If I go with the State I chip, or no chip, would it still be beneficial to replace the thermostat?

Thanks in advance for all your answers, opions, suggestion, recommendations, etc.

Given that you are unsure of the intake, don't want to buy 91 octane, and probably won't put in the 180 degree t-stat, I'd say the stage 1 is the chip for you.

I have one that I just removed (thinking of going to the stage 2), that I'll sell for $175 shipped.

And no, my answer is not only because I have one that I'm thinking of selling. I honestly believe that the stage 1 is the chip for you at this point.

If you were for sure adding a complete intake instead of the drop in, and were for sure committed to running the premium gas, I'd say stage 2 after you get all that and your exhaust work done.

    Thanks for the info, magnumSXT.

What made me question things and start looking for more info was what was posted on the JET website for the Dodge Charger 3.5L V6 chip:

Stage 1-For stock or mildly modified vehicles. Fuel and timing curves are modified for optimal performance and mileage using less expensive, lower octane fuels. Programming is designed to burn fuel at peak efficiency, which results in improved performance and mileage. Daily drivers can use lower cost regular fuel for potential mileage gains, but for optimal performance gains use of mid-grade or better is recommended.

Stage 2-Designed for the performance enthusiast, the Stage 2 features more aggressive programming to make the most horsepower and torque available. Fuel and timing curves are extensively modified for peak performance and drivability. Requires use of 91 octane fuel, 180 degree thermostat and free flow exhaust. Also works well with aftermarket intake systems, mass air sensors, TBI spacers, etc.
What really caught my eye was the claimed performance and mileage increases for the Stage I. While I do want performance gains, mileage remains the most important factor. I don't want to sacrifice mileage even for huge performance gains. And there's the cost of always having to put in 91 octane gas. Will 87 octane work with the Stage II?

As for buying yours, I really can't say right now. I'd hate to commit one way or the other when I'm not even sure what I want/need. But thanks for the offer. If I decided to go with the Stage I, I may see if it's still available.

Would you please summarize your experiences here with the Stage 1 chip ....? Any fuel consumption increases/decreases?

    Thanks!

When used in conjunction with my K&N Aircharger, I obtain an approximate 3-4 MPG increase in fuel economy. When used alone I notice minimal, if any, increase in MPG. However, with the Jet Chip in place the engine runs smoother, the lag in between shifts is reduced, and the engine appears to run leaner. I say this because when the chip is in place my tailpipes are clean/white on the inside of the tip. Upon removing the chip the tailpipes immediatly become black with soot.

The only reason I have removed it at this point is that I have a very short commute so running 91 octane has very little financial impact for me (12000 miles in my first year of ownership of the car), and since I have the aircharger, and now custom exhaust I am contemplating the move to the Stage 2 chip.

I am thinking about running the stage 2 chip also, just want to make sure it is worth it before I buy. There has been a lof discussion about the actual benefits of these chips. Since they are $250 I really want to make sure it is worth it. Anyone with a stage 2 have comments?

i have zoomers single catback, k&n aircharger, and jet II with 91 octane and my car runs fabulously well. I only had the car for three weeks before I added all three of those things within a few days so I cant really comment on the increase other than the sweet spot between 60-70mph is incredible. Dont remember there being much of one in that range when i first got the car.

im sure thewagon will testify that I had no problems keeping up with him on our way back from the SD meet. except that one time he got through a pocket that I couldnt get out of for like 3 miles lol
