    Question 2.7 - 5W-30 instead of 5W-20

    Hello everybody,

Today I have made my first maintenance service (4600 km, about four months of use already). But they have filled my engine with 5W-30 oil instead of 5W-20 that is recommended for 2.7 engines. They said it is normal to do that and this oil is also suitable for this engine. What do you think about it?

this is directly from page 0-6 in the LX shop manual.

    ²
Association des Constructeurs Européens d’ Automobiles (European Automobile Manufacturers Association)
    (ACEA)
    API SERVICE GRADE CERTIFIED
Use an engine oil that is API Certified. Mopar

    T provides
    engine oils, meeting Material Standard
MS-6395, that meet or exceed this requirement.
    SAE VISCOSITY
SAE 5W-30 engine oils are recomended for the
2.7L and 3.5L engines, for all operating temperatures.
These engine oils improve low temperature
starting and vehicle fuel economy. The recommended
engine oil viscosity for vehicles equipped
with the 5.7L engine is SAE 5W-20. Vehicles with
5.7L engines equipped with Multiple Displacement
System (MDS) must use SAE 5W-20 oil. Failure to
do so may result in improper operation of the Multiple
Displacement System (MDS). Refer to Multi
Displacement System under Starting and Operating
for details. Refer to the engine oil filler cap for
the recommened engine oil viscosity for each
vehicle. An SAE viscosity grade is used to specify the
viscosity of engine oil. Use only engine oils with multiple viscosities such as 5W-20 or 5W-30. These are specified
with a dual SAE viscosity grade which indicates the cold-to-hot temperature viscosity range.
NOTE: For 5.7L INTERNATIONAL APPLICATIONS ONLY: SAE 5W30 may be substituted for the recommended
SAE 5W20 if the 5W20 viscosity is not available in the region.
NOTE: For 6.1L only Use API rated SL/CF full synthetic
engine oil, such as Mobil 1T. SAE 0W-40 is
recommended. Refer to the engine oil viscosity
chart for the correct SAE grade meeting
    DaimlerChrysler Material Standard MS-10725.
    ACEA Categories
For countries that use the ACEA European Oil Categories for Service Fill Oils, use engine oils that meet the requirements
    of ACEA A1/B1, A2/B2, or A3/B3.
    ENERGY CONSERVING OIL
An Energy Conserving type oil is recommended for gasoline engines. The designation of ENERGY CONSERVING
is located on the label of an engine oil container.
    LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE

although in my owners manual for the 3.5L it says 10w-30.....

if you got it done at a dodge dealer, then if they say ok, i'd go with it...

since my first oil change i've used 10W-30 in the 3.5L, but 5w 30, i'll prob go with that from now on....a bit more easier to find in Royal Purple.

You will be ok with 5w30 in the 2.7. Actualy some of the early builds had 5w30 stamped in the manual and on the cap.

older versions of the 2.7L were using 5W30. i believe the only reason they switched to 5W20 was to boost fuel economy. they did the same with the 3.3/3.8L used in caravans.

Funny thing I found out is that different types of oil are recommended in different Chrysler 300 manuals. Some of them say 5W-30 only for 3.5 when 5W-20 for 2.5, 5.7, others say 5W-30 even for 2.7. On my engine's cap 5W-20 is recommended.

My manual says 10-30 or 5-30. I use 5-30 in winter and 10-30 in summer.

i saw that the manual recommends 5w30 for V6 engines. I have a 3.5L V6 in my Charger that has 10w30 stamped on the oil cap under the hood, but the dealership has been using 5w30 every time they change my oil & I haven't had any trouble, so it must be fine to use it.
