Widest tire on a 20" Daytona rim

I had this info on my computer but due to a serious crash have lost the info. What is the widest tire that can SAFELY be run on a 20" Daytona rim? I believe they might be 8.5 in wide but not sure. Thanks in advance.

My local tire shop could NOT get a 285-40-20 to fit on my 20x8.5 American Racing wheels. Don't know if OEM rims would be any different for some reason. The widest that I could get to work was 275-40-20.
