TPMS and second set of wheels for a 2008

I have a 2008 Charger and bought some chrome rims I am putting summer tires on. I want to keep my original wheels and tires for winter use. I found out if I set up the new wheels with a new set of TPMS sensors I have to have the car's TPMS system reprogrammed to recognize the new TPMS. Then if I switched back in the fall, the car's TPMS system would have to be reprogrammed again. Each reprogramming cost a $100 at the dealer! A service manager told me he would take the sensors out of the current wheels and have them put on the new rims and not have TPMS on the winter set. He said I have to be careful because if the TPMS sensors don't end back on the same wheel the cars TPMS would have to be reprogrammed.

What do other owners with 2008 or later cars do with a second set of wheels? Surely, you guys up north must have run into this.

its not only on the 08,s its the human race out smarting ourselves again. most tire shops have a programmer to reset the Tpms and they dont charge no 100.00 to do it, takes about 10min at most. to be honest with you the TPMS is more trouble than its worth, i wish they offered it as a option only, i would have it deleted. Find you a good tire shop and work with them and they can take care of it, i believe you can get new Sensors at Orielly,s for 40.00 and get them programmed and have the cost 1 time. What i would do if it were me, but im not to smart either.

Yup I have 2 sets of factory rims summers/winters and it's the same thing, unbolt one set bolt the others up and take it for a ride around the block, good to go!! I have had tis setup for 2 years now with no issues.

I think you drive over 25 mph for about 15-20 minutes and they reprogram themselves.

But you also have to watch out because 05-07 tpms sensors are diff from 08-09 ones.

That is what the tire store said. The service manager said you even had to reprogram after rotating your tires on a 2008.

Do you really care if it tells you which tire is low ? who cares if your tires are low you are probably going to recheck them anyways.

dont worry about it as long as the stupid light is off who cares. Your car will still run

Except that on the LX, you don't get to see what tire is low, you just get the idiot light.. even my 08 daytona is like that... but my 08 Avenger would give you the tire pressure in each wheel separately.. I can see that being an issue if you care what tire is going low..

Idiot light is good enough for me though.. it comes on and you can tell what tire it is by looking.. if you are gonna fill one, you should be checking them all anyhow. (tire pump is already running so why not eh?)

my 300 lets me know on the dash what each tire pressure is but on non evic cars its just the light

I have EVIC, but no individual display of what tire is low... Was surprised that it didn't have that since even the crappy avenger I had displayed tire pressure on each wheel..

but if it requires reprogramming at every rotation or tire change.. glad I have the basic TPMS..

But in response to the OP.. 100 bucks to reprogram is nothing more than a cash grab.. have somewhere else do it.. or find someone with a starscan and buy them a case of beer to do it for ya.

How hard is it to disable just that light?

there is lots of people that do... look on charger forums.. there is a few tpms writeups.

One guy took his tpms sensors and made a pvc canister and filled it with air and let it sit in the trunk.

Thanks, I have been looking there as well. But I am not any less confused.

If its really that bad of a deal just do it If it doesnt work. then pay the money or deal with the light.



It all started with that stupid bridgestone or firestone huge tire recall(think it was the SUV tire?).... It wasnt actually the tires it was the air pressure in the tires. So they started this law thinking it will save lives I think its all cars made after a certian date in 06 or 07 must have tpms sensors.

So for that reason most legit shops can also charge extra for working on cars with tpms sensors most shops will have a hidden sign somewhere saying they can charge more if your car is equipped with it. All you need is to find a good dealer with a cool mechanic that will just do it for nothing if its that big of a deal to you.

I have never found out what works and doesn't work for my vehicle so I will have the tire store where I am getting my new tires swap two of my stock wheels and see if the TPMS adjusts to it.

If the TPMS does not adjust to swapping the location of two wheels then I will know I either need to have the current TPMS used with the new rims and go back to the same location or have the TPMS reprogrammed.
