Post Pulled trigger on new tires...

THREAD UPDATED WITH PICS OF TIRES ON CAR...POST #16. Thanks for looking!

Do you think I will be happy with my purchase?

    The old:

    GoodYear Eagle F1 GS-D3
Performance Category: Max. Performance Summer (Actually an SUV tire--had SUV 4X4 stamped on the sidewall)
    Specs:
    255/55ZR18
    Load Index 109 = 2271lbs (1030kg) per tire
    Speed Rating “Y” = 186mph (300kph) 109Y XL 2006 Production
    Treadwear: 280
    Traction: AA
    Temperature: A
    Max inflation pressure: 50 psi
    Tread Depth: 10/32"
    Tire Weight: 31 lbs.
    Rim Width Range: 7-9"
    Section Width: 10.4"
    Tread Width: 8.2"

My review... Excellent traction in the rain, standing water included. High resistance to hydroplaning. Dry grip is also excellent, able to corner faster and accelerate out of turn earlier.
I ran with these for approximately 22,000 miles. I was not easy on them...and they weren't meant to be babied either! Overall rating: 9.915 (:biggrinjester

    The New:

    Yokohama ADVAN ST
    Performance Category: Street/Sport Truck Summer
    Specs:
    255/55R18
    Load Index 109 = 2271lbs (1030kg) per tire
    Speed Rating “W” = 168mph (270kph) 109W RF
    Treadwear: 320
    Traction: AA
    Temperature: A
    Max inflation pressure: 50 psi
    Tread Depth: 10/32"
    Tire Weight: 35 lbs.
    Rin Width Range: 7-9"
    Section width: 10.6"
    Tread width: 8.7"

I decided to go with these because I didn't feel like spending $1600 on another set of GS-D3s (they're $400 per, in Canada), and because they got some pretty good reviews on several online tire sites...much like the GS-D3 when I decided on those. Both tires also got some negative reviews, but I feel that those point out some shortcomings in either tire...a lot of people complained about treadwear. Damn, those people should buy All-season "highway" tires! My wants: Excellent dry and wet weather performance, handling, decent treadwear (20,000-25,000 miles). I'm not concerned about noise nor am I concerned about "ride comfort"! Yeah, my GYs were kinda harsh over road irregularities but that's the price I was willing to pay to have what I really wanted. :bigthumb:
So, what do you think...will I be happy when I get those puppies mounted tomorrow?
Any and all comments are more than welcome!

Sorry to hear about your bad experience. Wow. I'm assuming that this was in rainy conditions???

I hope others have had better experiences with this tire!

I will definitely get a review up here after I have done some mileage with them.

    Thanks!

Anyone else want to hazard a guess as to whether or not I'll be happy with these? Prior experience with them is not necessary to give me your thoughts... so whatcha all think?

    Cheers!

I think you should have bought some Vred's, but that's only my opinion. It's considered a summer tyre but has some of the best wet traction ratings of any tyre out there. Good luck,I hope they serve you well.

    Personal Best: coming soon!!

I actually considered those but with shipping to Canada and conversion to US cash...plus install and balance...would have come out to a lot more than what I paid. The few sites where I found Vreds in that size, they listed at 190+ per tire.

I hope they serve me well as well! Traction is rated AA, so it SHOULD be good at least.

    Thanks for the comment.

Maybe I'll give those Vreds a try when these wear out eventually!

    not as good

That particular Goodyear is a highly rated tire.

Remember the AA only indicates wet stopping. Nothing else.

Check out www.caranddriver.com for a new tire comparison test.

One thing I would insist on is a unidirectional tire. But I know nothing about those.

I think your are going to miss the Goodyears, but you will have more money in your pocket. I got the 245/50R18 GS-D3 recently, but the 255 were probably a better choice for our heavy cars. Tire rack has a closeout at a great price for them right now.

Not as good...yeah, I'm kinda expecting that seeing I didn't pay the GY premium!!! Those GYs are $400 apiece up here...and that is what I paid 2 years ago.

If AA is for wet stopping, then you know it is not hydroplaning. So, shouldn't it be reflective to a point about it's wet handling capabilities...i.e resistance to hydroplane? IDK...

On dry? Man, that must have been one hell of a surprise! You sure nothing broke in the steering? How fast were you going, and what was the speed limit? Read my initial review below...

I'm sure I will miss the GYs...they are one hell of an excellent tire.

When I bought my set, I almost went with the size you bought...but there only happened to be 3 in Canada! The 255s are reinforced, are the 245s?

I saw the closeout sale at TireRack. I waited too long to get new tires...I was pressed for time, and I didn't want to travel too far to get them installed. Ordering tires from the States, I would have had them shipped to an installer in the US and crossed over to
get them installed but like I said, I didn't want to travel too far. When they took my tires off the car today, one was just starting to show it's belt.

Here is what I think of my new ADVAN STs:

First impression? Me likey...a lot!!! I ran them pretty hard today...and experienced a faint protest from the tires in a 30kph curve doing 70. Go figure...

They have about the same transmission of road irregularities to the driver as the GS-D3s...I don't mind though. I'm one of those drivers that likes to feel the road, and know what's going on.

From a standing start, there was a little wheelspin but not a whole lot...car launched nicely. If I had to compare to the GS-D3, I would say dry handling characteristics are about the same, perhaps a hair lower...but still very impressive.

The tires' resistance to want to follow a groove is quite high...I had no problem with running in or out of the groove...the tire was never undecided! Steer it and it will follow your lead...it will not take you where you don't want to go. My GS-D3couldn't really make up their mind where they wanted to be!!!

They are a bit pricey but the GS-D3 were $600 more than these (up here in Canada). While I was highly satisfied with the Goodyears, I wanted to try something different this time. I really think that I am going to like this tire over the long haul.

I didn't buy them to drag. It is known that a tire that handles very well on the road and is awesome in rain or dry will not be as good on the dragstrip...from a dig. I loved the GS-D3 in the 255/55ZR18 size...best tires that I had on any car, by far.

We'll see how my ADVAN STs compare...

A few more miles on them and I am equally impressed. I drove a bit yesterday in light rain, and they handled well but I didn't push the car either. I want heavier rain soon (should be here in the next couple of days) so that I can really test them out!!! I like to know what my tires are capable of before I am totally comfortable with them.

My GS-D3s were great on either wet and dry, and I drove accordingly, and without fear. I hope these prove to be about the same.
