I need some r/t RWD tire help...can't see to get it right.

    OK!

My KDWS's with less then spirited driving are only going to last a bit mroe then 30k possibly. Snow is very disappointing with these SNOW tires and the more they wear the more the wet traction goes poopy too. Oh yea, I went with 255/55 and the extra width of an inch didn't help much.

Being I really need tread wear more then performance at this point I need advice on a good ultra or high performance all season tire for around $150 a pop or less.

    Any suggestions?

I have been on tire rack and have seen alot. I would like to keep the 255/55 or if there is a stock size that will give good performance let me know.

    Thanks!

For driving in snow, you need narrower tires - not wider. The 255's are wider than your stock tires.

Best thing would be 4 , yes 4, snow tires on all 4 wheels. Even without AWD, snows on the front help. Better braking and turning.

I had 4 snows on my 96' Impala SS when I lived up north, car handled great.

Got tired of the snow and moved to Florida.

I had 4 Blizzaks on my 92 Thunderbird and it handled snow better than my F150 4X4 did.

Got tired of the snow and moved to Georgia.

I am not so concerned about the snow...after now viewing tirerack where I originally bought them they are miserable in the snow they are designed for.

What higher treadwear/quieter tire is there without sacrificing too much performance?

What kind of wear are you getting, and are you rotating regularly. What tire PSIs do you run

I run my KDWS between the recommended 30 ish for comfort but lately up to 40 for economy IIRC...I think the peak is like 44 cold.

I rotate religiously every 5k when I do my Mobil 1 and I have a good alignment. Not dealing with uneven wear and I don't consider my driving even that "spirited". I had a set on an FWD Grand Prix that lasted a whopping 14k and this set may last to about 30/32k or hopefully through the winter season. No burnouts or especially hard turns.

I have a magnum r/t and am interested in lower profile tires. I am not ready to spring for new wheels, so is there a major drawback to putting lower profile tires on the stock wheels besides throwing off the odometer/speedometer?

Going with a lower profile tire adds to harshness. Also, the load range of the tire can be significantly lower. This can add to premature tire wear.

Have you looked at Genereal Grabbers UHP tire in a 255x55x18 size?

Have you checked these out? Good load rating and in your price range. I still like my Primacy MXV4's. I just hit 51k and they still look and feel brand new.

Would throw my speedo off one click since they are almost a full inch taller then stock.

Right now I am losing 5/100 of a mile every mile I go with the 245/55/18 that are an inch wider but virtually 1/100 of an inch shorter. With wear the height of my current tire is meaningless...the problem is there aren't many 245/55/18 longer wearing tire options. Should I go back to my boring stock skinny tire size?

I have to say those Primacy tires have been on top of the tireack scores for 18 months now...cost is medium but they will easily outlast a new set of what I currently have so I guess they pay for themselves over time in a way. High scores all around...I think this will be my next best bet!

    Thanks HH!

The 255/55-18 is about 0.4 inches larger diameter than stock size of 225/60-18. It's a 1.45% difference, well below the recommended 3% range.
