    Question 22" wheels DO or DON'T

    I have an '05 RT. I love the look of 22s on the Magnum. I have several wheel that I like picked out. I know about ride quality, bigger wheel less tire rougher ride, but I hear things about transmissions getting ruined in a year or so. I went from chroming my stock wheels to getting 20s and now Im back to 22s. What's the real deal about 22 inch wheels on Magnums. Do they really mess up you transmission?

    What would be the best wheel and tire sizes, offsets, etc...

    '05 Magnum RT, Midnight Blue Pearl - Mods: 20% tint, Dub chrome door handles, debadged rear door (except Rams head), silver billet knob covers (MRK Group), Dub chrome lower window sills, stock navi upgrade, silver bulbs (front and rear), blinker mod, and fuel door mod.

    I can't imagine why they would. You can always keep the diameter the same as stock - then how would the tranny even feel it? Even if you fill out the wheel wells a little, you can only go slightly larger without other problems. It's not enough to make a difference to the transmission, IMO. Harsher ride? Yes, most likely. Trans problems? NWIH.

    I have never heard of 22" ruining a transmission, nor has the performance shop that sold me my wheels and provides custom upgrades to the dealerships in my area. You need to drive a little more carefully with 22"s (avoiding potholes and hopping curbs). The ride from 20"s to 22"s is not that noticeable, I have had both. Going from 18's to 22's is going to be a new world for you. I personally do not like having excess sidewall on tires it makes the car feel squishy and sluggish in handling (my opinion).

    The only negative I have heard and know of is when people exceed the stock radius, the car is not engineered for that and will probably damage other components. Call a reputable dealer and they will tell you the same thing.

    The 22" wheel diameter is not going to cause degradation in ride quality. It will still be smooth and very comfortable. The reason is that our cars have a very long wheelbase and very compliant suspension with a lot of wheel travel to absorb bumps. So, wheel size has very little noticeable effect on ride quality.

    Like Viperguy mentioned, wheel size also has nothing to do with wear or strain on any component of your car, especially the transmission. Whether you go with 18", 20" or 22" size wheels, you'll be selecting a tire size that keeps the overall diameter within 3% of the stock tire size.

    As for what are the recommended 22" tire sizes, probably the best choice would be a 265/35-22 size tire. This size gives you sufficient sidewall height for a comfortable ride and enough width to fill out the wheel well. You'll have that massive, aggressive and wide stance, I'm guessing you'd be looking for.

    The optimum wheel width would be 9.5" to 10" width for all four wheels with that tire size I just recommended. The optimum or typical offset is 15mm with 12.5 - 20mm being in the acceptable range.

    If you want to talk about staggered fitments, we can cover that also.

    I'm running 22" Boss 313's in black w/ a polished rim wrapped in Kumho 265 35R22's. Great ride and no issues.

    I just picked up my new 300 Limited. I put a set of Forge-Tec FT-15 22"s with Kumho 265 35R 22's on the car and all of this talk about a bad ride with 22's seems to be an exaggeration in my opinion. Maybe because they are forged and the weight of the wheel tire combo is close to the stockers, but they are really nice and not harsh. My wife drove the car for the first time today and commented on how good the ride was. You know how women can be with the "ride" part of a car... I think part of the issue is compared to the 17 or 18'" tall sidewall tires that come with the car there would be a noticeable difference but if you had them on the car when you picked it up as I did they would feel right. Anyway these Forge-Tec wheels are really nice and the price of them for forged is good. I would suggest you take a look at these if you are torn beween 20's and 22's due to any weight issues.

    How bad are the roads where you live? It's not so much 22s ride rougher, but the more likelihood of bending a rim.

    If you go w/22s, get the lightest wheel possible. Our cars aren't meant for heavy 22" cast wheels, which will put more wear and tear on suspension parts.

    The first 2 pics are of my car. The last one has the wheels I like on it. Dont know who owns that one.

    Thanks fro all of the information. I will take everything into consideration. These are the wheels Im thinking of gettin in 22" but I think they will be too heavy so Im looking at some type of wheel with spokes. tell me what you think though.




    I like these wheels also.
