Any Way Around The Sales Tax for Out of State Buyers

I'm looking at a great deal on a new SRT8 Charger in the sunny state of California, but the dealer insists I have to pay sales tax even if I live in Oregon. Of course between the cost of a road trip and the sales tax it would make the whole deal a non deal.

    Is there anyway around this????

setup a dealer trade with a local dealer.

You will always pay sales tax, just depends what state you buy the car in.

Maybe if you did it online? I don't know for certain. When I lived in Boston, you could purchase a car in New Hampshire (no sales tax) but you had to pay Mass sales tax on it when registered until is was over 1 year old.

There is currently o sales tax in Oregon. Plus I've already purchased and took delivery of a new Dodge in New Mexico without paying their sales tax. I've also been working on deals with Washington State dealers and they don't seem to need the sales tax since I'm from Oregon.

Maybe there have been too many California residence claiming out of state status????

    CALIFORNIA LAW:

tell the dealer to look it up..

when buying a car in California, the sales tax is calculated on where the car is to be registered (the buyer's home address).. not the dealers address..

if you live in Oregon and the car is to be registered in Oregon, then you pay the sales tax to Oregon, since Oregon has no sales tax you don't pay any:

    Check www.dmv.ca.gov:

    To avoid the CA sales tax you need to either;
    1. Flat bed the vehicle out of California and then register it in Oregon

or 2. Have the dealer deliver it to you out of the state of California.

Essentially, you can not operate the vehicle in California before it gets registered in Oregon

    there you go..

very correct and thats the law in most states. but for the tags, they should give you a temporary in transit tag so u can drive it home. you should not have to flatbed.

that would be the responsibility of the Oregon DMV and the buyer, most CA dealers aren't set up for out of state DMV transactions.

I bought my Magnum in South Carolina, and the dealer paid the Georgia tax as part of the 'package'.

I bought one of my xFIL's company cars and we did the temp tag thing, but from PA to NY...

What's a flatbed cost vs flying/driving? Big-O in Greenville was quite willing to run mine down towards Atlanta - I met their 'driver' while I was waiting for them to 'prep' the car.

The dealer recommended delivery in Vegas or car carrier to Oregon.

    Thanks everyone for your input.

yeah but in both of these cases you where not dealing with the Rebublik of Kalifornia.

This State is special (at least the powers that run it think it is) and we have to make our own rules just to make life difficult for everyone else..

just telll them you not registering it in Cali... they *should* give you some sort of temp paperwork to get it outta state... even tho the little temp stickers arent free anymore.

As mentioned a few times in this thread that works in most states, but California doesn't play that game.

I have researched this topic and even called the tax people in Cali and the bottom line is "If you take delivery in California you must pay all appropiate taxes".

So, what would the taxes be on a new vehicle purchase in California or do I even want to know??????
