Vacation!

My road trip stats next Friday, 05/19/06. We're leaving Round Rock, TX, going down IH 35 to San Antonio to get on US 90 to get to Alpine, TX. That's our first overnight spot. Carlsbad, NM is probably our next night. Maybe Taos for the 3rd. Any Forum members around we could maybe meet with?

Oops. Forgot to say that we're not actually leaving until the next week; around the 25th or 26th. I will at the M & G; it's why I started my vacation early.

So that's why I didn't show up!

3 days and counting until we leave. We only have 8 or 9 days, so we may not make CA, but my daughter decided she wants to see the "Big Trees". I know the Sequoias are pretty much in Sequoia Nat'l Park, but the Redwoods go from Big Sur all the way up to OR. What would be the closest to Sequoia Nat'l Park?

Well folks, the time is nigh. We set off tomorrow for our odyssey. 8-9 days of driving, sightseeing, and picture taking with a little Geocaching thrown in for good measure.

First day is over. I don't know if I can do this for 8-9 more days. The open road is a harsh mistress. At least me and the youngun got along OK. We only made 500 miles, but we had a late start. We're staying in Ft. Stockton, TX tonight and somewhere in NM tomorrow. Maybe E. AZ Sat. I brought 2 digital cams along, as well as two laptops and a digital video camera. One of the still cams takes rechargeable AA batts which I brought a charger. The other takes a proprietary charger that I didn't bring along. I have a card reader for it, but I forgot to bring the one for the other. Technology is getting too complicated with all these different flash memory cards and battery chargers.

don't worry man. Traveling get's a lot easier over the days. It's a shock to the system when you have total freedom. I know all about it. I traveled for for 7 years straight.

I hope to see a lot of pictures when you return.

Well, we just got settled in to a motel in Carsbad, NM. We are going to the Cavern tomorow and then up to Sante Fe and Taos. Probably stay another nigth in NM before hitting AZ. Not sure about CO and UT yet, except we'll be at all 4 at Four Corners. Looks like we won't have time to get to CA after all. Got 21 MPG again even with some mountains. Saw McDonald onservatory, which was built back in the 30's (82" mirror). There's 2 more now, a 107" and a 11.1 x 9.8 meters one. Tried a WOT run when we were out in the middle of the desert; got to 145 MPH and it didn't seem to want to go any faster. I really didn't either. Had to downshift to 4th at about 120 to get it past the old limit (128). More tomorrow.
