View Full Version : Lug Nut Issues

I had to change a flat tire on my SRT8 and I stripped the factory junk lug nuts. I replaced the factory ones with the gorilla lugs #41147. I was a bit leary of these because they are the same lenth as the stock junk lugs. Now when I back the car out of a parking space the front end now bangs hard. Guess what, the gorilla lugs are bottoming out on the studs, not the wheels. I just ordered Topline # C1709HL4, they are buldge seat and only about 1/4 of an inch longer than 41147, and they will seat on the wheels, not the wheel studs. The overal length on the gorrillas is 1.40. The toplines are 1.65. Externally the gorilla lug nuts and the stock ones look identical, but internally the gorillas are shorter.

YIKES... I just bought 20 Gorilla nuts to replace all of mine.
Can anyone else confirm they don't fit?
Isellspeed can you explain what you mean by "the front end now bangs hard"?
Thanks

When I back out of a parking spot and turn the wheel hard, the front end bangs and shifts like I've run over something. With the wheels turned and backing up and only my lock lug tight against the rim, I think the wheel is trying to remove itself from the car.

I gave the part #'s to Josh at Highhorse. You should be able to go to your local speed shop and and order them. C1709HL4 Topline. They are for cars with longer studs, but not those long goofy lugs they sell for trucks.

Wow i just went through the exact same thing the other day putting my stock wheels back on. Also did your stock lug wrench fit those crappy stock lugs?

What lug wrench? The antique 4 way tire iron I had in my basement? I also discovered that the dealer removed my can of fix a flat too! Thank God I keep a spare SRT8 wheel and tire at my shop. I had to beat a 13/16 socket onto those crappy stock lugs just to get them off of the car.

Isellspeed,
I have had the front end bucking and popping issue since I've owned the car - before the first factory lug nut was removed. It's more pronounced with cold weather. I've had it explained to me as being a function of the allignment camber and the width of the tire. It has improved as I got some wear on the front tires. I would expect new tires to be more problematic.

Bob,
They should work, but they are the same as the factory junk lugs, these too have a stainless steel cover crimped onto a open end lugnut. I prefer solid one piece chrome lugs. Old school here.

There's some good info on a thread I did a while back:
Solid replacement for cheap stock lugnuts? (http://www.lxforums.com/board/showthread.php?t=83998)
I ended up with the Gorilla 91147, and they work great (on my Daytona with MSRT wheels - they may be a bit thicker than the stock R/T's - if so, that would account for the extra stud length you're experiencing). [EDIT: Sorry, I didn't realize you had an SRT.]
From that thread, I'll quote myself:
After replacing mine as mentioned above, I've been to Vegas and back, and I checked them at 50 miles or so, then once again in Vegas, and once again after getting home, and I'm confident they're fine. So I can recommend the Gorilla 91147 (13/16 hex) or the 41147 (3/4 hex) or the 91147SS (Stainless Steel), or the 91147XL (Extra long).
You might want to look into the 91147XL to give you the length you need.
Hope that helps.

i thought the lugs nuts were 21mm?
Originally, the lugs were 21MM. But Chrysler used those cheap crappy thin metal covers over grade 8 yellow steel lugs. The crapy covers get rounded easily - especially is the dealer or a tire shop uses an impact wrench on them. Then the 21MM no longer fits.
I went to open-ended Gorilla nuts that are 14MMx 1.5 and use a 3/4" hex.
Not the most aesthetically pleasing, but work with more wheels, and help pass tech inspection for drag racing, where thread engagement rules exist.

This brings up another consideration - the spare wheel is CONSIDERABLY thinner at the mounting surface than the stock wheels. When I put two spares on my front hubs for the racetrack (which didn't pass tech, BTW), I realized that the stock lugnuts would not work with the stock spare. I could have been wrong, and I went ahead and used some open-ended ones that were handy, but it appeared that the stock nuts were WAY too short to take up all the stud length that was present with the thinness of the spare.

wrong type for stock wheels. Like Bob says - 91147SS 14X1.5 Bulge seat

Yes, they are a two piece lug nut, but better made than the stockers.
I have used a impact wrench on them with no problems.

Just to clarify again, here are the differences between the Gorilla lugnuts that fit our cars:
These are all the same length (1.40"):
Gorilla 91147 (Chrome, 13/16 hex)
Gorilla 41147 (Chrome, 3/4 hex)
Gorilla 91147SS (Stainless Steel, 13/16 hex)
Gorilla 91147BC (Black Chrome, 13/16 hex)
These are longer (1.90")
Gorilla 91147XL (Extra long, Chrome, 13/16 hex).
There are also combo packages, but the above are sold in packages of four.

so as long as I get lugs at 1.400" and 13/16 with a thread size of 14mm x 1.50

About a year ago Josh at High Horse Performance ( http://www.highhorseperformance.com/ ) set me up with a set for my '05 AWD Magnum (stock wheels). We ended up trying a couple of different part numbers before we had the proper fit. The price was reasonable and the service was great. I think the set of 20 cost less than I paid the dealer for 5 of the crappy stock nuts! I feel confident that they now know what works and can take care of it easily.

New lugs are now on the car, and guess what....no more banging when I back up and turn the wheel. I checked the 16 lugs ( 1.40" ) that I took off the car and they all were barely seating on the rim, and you could see inside them that they had bottomed out on the stud and not the wheels. I have ordered another set of these for a customers 300 and will post the pictures of them on Monday.

^^^ That's pretty scary. I was a little concerned that what you experienced would be the case when I did mine - I'm certain it's not in my case, but I believe you that it is in yours. I don't know what the difference is.
Glad you caught it, and got it resolved - that coulda been bad juju.

For those looking for black lug nuts........You can add these to the list:
Summit Racing P/N SUM-754003B
Gorilla P/N 91147BC
I've bee nrunning the Summit ones all winter so far and they work great.

We see facroty lugnuts "mishapped" all the time at the dealership. Thre is nothing wrong with the factory lug if you use the correct size socket. Dont quote me but I think it is 21mm. I see alot of guys using a 3/4 (its slightly larger) and it will twist the cheap chrome cover off. The best way to fix it is to use a old or at least cheap 21 mm socket and hammer it back on; it will "re-crimp" the chrome cover.
Give it a try....it works.

I just bought a 22mm socket just for my stock lugs. The stock lug wrench that came with my car is worthless!

Good to hear I am guessing you went with the Topline's C1709HL4? I just ordered mine. Let's give topline a try!!.......I guess!:blam:
I’ve run into this problem myself today. I had to take the right front tire off while I was on a road trip last weekend and was forced to use the stamped out wrench they “give” you with the spare tire. Wouldn’t you know I’m now trying to re-torque the lug nuts and the 13/16 socket I normally use will not even come close to fitting. So after a little measuring I found a 21mm impact socket is the best choice to go with. After being forced to massage the socket onto a couple of the junk nuts I found one of them so loose it started to spin as soon as I touched it with the socket!!!! I used a torque wrench to set them all at 110 ft lbs at the end of the job in Michigan. Figures I would find the correct tools after I was forced to use the junk tool on the junk nuts. I now am in a position where I need to replace these fine pieces of Dodge engineering instead of just wanting to. Has anyone checked to see if lug nuts from a Mercedes C class will work? The car is built on a C class chassis after all isn’t it? One more thing, I keep finding myself forced to use the spare tire jack to lift the car because there doesn’t seem to be a good place to place a floor jack without crumpling some plastic. Maybe I need to invest in a new high speed low drag floor jack to get farther under the car. Thanks for any help.
