View Full Version : "Inside wear" greater than "outside wear" on both pads and tires?

Hey folks - The other day, I started getting a constant squeal from my front brakes (which have never chirped at all). I suspected it was the "wear indicator squeal" or whatever you want to call it, so I pulled the front wheels off to look at the pads. On both sides, the inner pad was down to nothing, while the outer pad looks newish. I've got 23k miles on OEM stuff, with one roadcourse and a bunch of 1/4 mile track runs.

While the wheels were off, I noticed that the inner edge of the contact surface on both front tires was worn through in four or five spots - the tires are needing to be replaced right away, and I knew that already, but they're actually worn through on the inner edges, and the outer edges look like the middle tread - down to the wear marks, but not beyond that.

So I have a couple questions:

1) What might be in play to cause the inner pads to wear out so much faster than the outer pads?

2) I did a 4-wheel alignment when I had the KW v2's installed, but since they've settled a little bit, would that throw off the camber enough to wear the insides of the tires faster than the outsides?

3) Is this one problem with two symptoms, or two problems unrelated?

Whatchoo all think?

Well I don't have KW but I do have Tein and my rear driver side tire is showing metal on the inside as well. The front driver side is wearing very thin as well. It is the camber. It is off. I just picked up some SPC Performance stuff and hoping to have it installed this Saturday.

Here is a link of the product that I got...

I have no idea about the pads though, I know longer have the factory one's. I have Wilwood from Todd at TCE in AZ.

Thanks Noid - I'm gonna look into that when the $$ are friendlier - gotta do four tires right now, and pads, and that's gonna kill it for a while...

BUMP for the brake wear gurus (I know they're out there).

trust me... I need to do the 4 tires as well... and it is KILLING me on the money front... this is one of the main reasons I didn't do the Rumble...

I am putting the stock tires on today and will take pictures of the tires that are coming off. Then I hope next week to get the new tires...

between tires and all the grey goose I need to buy for the Festival... I am going broke...LOL

He might be able to answer your questions on the brakes... I am not sure how far you are away from his shop but it might be a shot...

My guess is that the guide pins the caliper "float" upon are in need of grease and service. The inner pad is directly effected by the piston whereas the outer is pulled into the rotor by the action of the assembly as a whole. With the pins sticking the inner pad is pushed by the piston but with less counter action of the caliper body pulling the outer pad.

Check it out, I'm betting you find the pins and holes are all gummed up.

Here is the rear driver side tire that I took off today:

Here is the driver side front wheel. It might be hard to tell but it is wearing pretty bad on the side:

I missed this one before, somehow - I go to school in Tempe - had no idea Todd was here. I've heard great things about him from people whose opinion I respect, so I'll have to look him up... oh, wait:

Thanks Todd - I'll take a look tomorrow and see if that's it. Wanna talk brake pads? I was thinking of some EBC's, but I'd love to hear your thoughts as to replacement pads... I can give you a ring tomorrow or we can chat here.

Yeah, floating calipers need to actually float for the pads to wear evenly. I think you should put on Brembos then you won't have to worry about it. LOL!

When the dealer checked my brakes at 30,000 miles, the inside pads were worn more than the outsides. They swapped the pads on all four wheels and serviced them.
