View Full Version : January 2008 LXOM: hemiwagn
written by hemiwagn
It began early: “Cars, Cars and more Cars” was mom’s first entry in my baby book some 5 decades ago. It continued with toy cars, model cars and slot cars up to my first real car – Dad’s (then) seven year old 1968 Chevrolet BelAir that he insisted I pay $500 for. I’ve had a string of Chevys since, and still have two: another ’68 BelAir (a gift from my incredible wife Sandra) and a ’68 Camaro SS 396 Convertible. I’ve had each of those cars for over 10 years now. Oh, if cars could talk….
So it’s no wonder that my avatar user title says “Converted Chevy Guy”. Bow Tie loyalty is hard to break.
But the fantastic LX platform did just that! In fall 2004, we needed a late model car and frankly I’d started thinking of cars as appliances. Then we saw the Magnum. Shortly after, the 300C SRT8 was announced. Figuring there would eventually be a Magnum SRT8, we held off. In August 2005 we took delivery of our Magnum SRT8.
The Conversion continued. In July 2006 we traded our ‘98 Camaro SS Convertible for a Charger SRT8. Why? Because the Charger is better by every measure. Faster, safer, braking, handling, mileage, emissions, versatility – everything.
Finally, we rounded out the LX trilogy in June 2007 with a 2005 300 Limited for one of my daughters who would be attending school far from home. Conversion complete.
Ahhh, the Hemiwagn.
This is the car of my life. It has re-ignited the passion. Never before have I customized a car this much, or ever raced down the dragstrip. But the thought of a 500HP 12 second car that turns heads and is a ball to drive cross-country does it for me. I know in 25 years Sandra and I will judge time as ‘BHW’ or ‘AHW’ (before or after hemiwagn). My kids will talk about it and I’ll still have the friends for life I’ve met here on LX Forums.
Which leads me to the thing I want to talk about most…..
This place. LX Forums Modern Mopar Muscle. IT STARTS RIGHT HERE.
A 21st Century car club? Maybe, but in reality much, much more than that. This place starts with the cars but quickly becomes about the people, the community. A respectful, thoughtful community that looks out for their own, shares the triumphs and congratulates new discoveries. A place where people are compelled to share their day, the little or the bigger things in life, like job changes, births, marriages, emergencies and the passing of loved ones. We salute those who keep us safe and remember when those serving pay the ultimate price. Godspeed Cpl. James Lindsey “jtl13f”. We help whenever we can. We disagree. We have an abyss. We’re a micro society. Everybody learns something here, I love it.
People drive thousands of miles just to meet in person folks they’ve become close to through the internet. Meet and Greets happen weekly, probably more often than that. Thanks to the good folks who build our magnificent machines, we meet at and sometimes have special tours of the Brampton Assembly Plant. We have rocking good parties! Come to Montreal or Spring Festival in LA or Shindig or, well you name the region, you will have a blast and take away good memories and new friends.
I have two friends for life, Jaak and Token, who I’d never have met without LX Forums. Hemi31, Heidi and fnkychkn have helped me immeasurably and I’m grateful to call them friends. Most of all though, I have to thank my love Sandra for being involved, for being the arbiter of good taste, and for understanding me.
I’m proud of this place and hope you are too. Thank you all for making me LXOM.
I couldn’t be prouder.

Hi everybody and thank you all for the well wishes.
I am in the middle of video Part 2 and will be replying to your comments hopefully by mid week (darned year end work has kept me hopping.....)
Congrats!
I love the video.
I also love your hood on the Mag. Who makes it?
I read Greg's LXOM acceptance and I totally understand just how much it's true. Hemiwagn really has been a fun journey and great focal point for so many things beyond the great car that it is.
The hood is certainly one of those things that just stands out. From the concept car's hood, which so many love, to how a Viper pulls the air in over the rad, through the hood, it's Greg making a vision, reality. I never thought that he'd actually make it happen, when we were looking at the Viper at our first SRT Track Experience.
But that, he did... From concept...
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e266/srt8jaak/hemiwagn/Heatextractorsconceptsketch.jpg
To creation...
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e266/srt8jaak/hemiwagn/IMG_3704Medium.jpg
It took a while to make.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e266/srt8jaak/hemiwagn/IMG_3893Medium.jpg
The car was tied up during this time.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e266/srt8jaak/hemiwagn/IMG_4136.jpg
As Greg ensured it met his vision.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e266/srt8jaak/hemiwagn/IMG_4177.jpg
I even got to visit a couple of times while it was in progress. And I was blown away by the attention to detail in that hood. Even underneath.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e266/srt8jaak/hemiwagn/IMG_4184.jpg
In fact, it's so good, I don't think a lot of people noticed it at Spring Fling last year. Why? Because it looks like it came from the factory that way.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e266/srt8jaak/hemiwagn/IMG_4320Medium.jpg
So where do you get that hood? It's a labour of love... You have to have a vision and follow it through.
http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e266/srt8jaak/hemiwagn/HW032.jpg
Congrats Greg...well deserved!!!!
one day we will meet...along with Jaak and Token

It's been a while since I've checked in here, but it's really nice to see that Hemiwagon was named LX of the month. No other Lx has made me feel greener than looking at his MSRT with the custom hood/intake, and all the other goodies buried underneath. Definitely top on my list.
Plus with 3 LX's in your garage, that means you gave me approx 2min and 25 seconds of work!! Hopefully all 3 were made on O.T:mrgreen:
Maybe with more guys like you and wheelin, I could afford myself another:banana:

Have you ordered your Challenger yet?
Thank-YOU Rab! What many may not know is Rab was on the pre-pre production team (if that is a term) of the LX's. He is one of the guys that help Chrysler 'get it right' as to build, fit and finish, especially the interiors.
Thanks Rab for your high standards.

Thanks Ozzie. The write-up came from the heart. Great folks here, like you conducting the Electrofied's and LatinHoney's wedding at spring festival last year.

Sincere congratulations goes out to you... Good on ya'!
Happy New Year.

Thanks Ken. The story of your Dad's LX purchase was very touching this year.
Congrats Gregg! Having met you I know how great a guy you are, it's great that other LX owners can recognize that from a distance. Congrats again Gregg!
Thank you Garry. You always make me laugh and you host a he11 of a party! Your car is one of the best themed LX's I've ever seen!
Congratulations Greg, it's very nice to see that the fine folks at LXF finally agree with me. LOL
You are a gentleman, and certainly a most deserving LXOM. Your write-up and video are both clearly heartfelt and inspiring.
I am very fortunate to have you as my friend.
Enjoy your LXOM, and you've definitely raised the bar as far as the acceptance speeches!

Congratulations on being the only 2008 LXOM in history!
Thanks Jon, I really appreciate your comments. We miss you up here and you are still inspiring mods - like the sight gauge for my painted rad bottle. (ooops, cat is out of bag now...)

I also love your hood on the Mag. Who makes it?

Thank you Tom. It will be wonderful to hook up again. A LXOM group pic is a great idea--but ya gotta put the clipboard down. :)

Hey My Friend!
I am so honored to see that you finally got the recognition you so deserve as LX of the Month! I have nominated you on more than one occasion and have finally seen my wish for you come to fruition.
Aside from all your wonderful Magnum accomplishments, Greg, you are truly one of the kindest, most friendly and helpful people one could ever hope to meet. I’m glad I had that opportunity at this past Spring Festival. The first letter of your name also represents ‘Genuine’
Although my first experience with you in the DoubleTree Hotel Lobby involved watching you truck in your spare tire up the elevator to your room, it was even better being parked next to you in the garage and watching you meticulously pamper your baby with joy and passion. (I was kind of hoping you would move right on over to my car and continue the same detailing, lol!)
You know I look forward to seeing you again at this year’s SF. Don’t expect anything much different on my C other than some body damage that occurred 2 weeks ago. Maybe it will be repaired by then.
Keep up the great work you do promoting the LXs and this wonderful forum. Congratulations on this most humble honor!
Your friend and garage mate!

I'm sure that by now, most everyone who is going to, has viewed this magnificant thread. I was just thinking. Is there a way that it could be forwarded to the decision makers at Chrysler? Not that it would change their decision to cancel production of the Magnum, but it might make them aware of just what they are doing.
As I keep repeating, If you advertise it, they will come! Something Mother Mopar has not clued in to.
Just my .02 cents worth.
Everytime I watch these two videos, I can't help getting all choked up and can relate, even with my SXT. Now, if I had a MSRT........

Oh boy, my secret is out now. The magic of digital editing, I put jaak's dyno run audio track into my vid. I did that of course because your car is red and they make more HP.... Plus it sounds better!

Hmmm, we must have an audio of your car on the dyno somewhere. It sounds awesome!!! Sort of like thunder vs. an animal roar.
