View Full Version : HELP - Magnum won't start

So I start my Mag RT up today and get to the end of the block. As I turn onto the main street the Engine Check light comes on and so does a light that according to my manual is the ETC (Electronic Throttle Control warning light. I immediately pull a u-turn and go home.
In the driveway I shut it off and then try to restart it. It cranks but will not start. I got out the Flashpaq and set it back to stock, (never had a problem before but thought it might make a difference), still cranks but won't start. Also used the Flashpaq to check DTC's and there were none.
Had it towed to the dealer but they probably won't get it on a lift until tomorrow. Anybody have any idea what's going on here? Can somebody light the FNKYCHKN lamp please? I'm so bummed, this car has been relatively trouble-free and I'd like to get some idea of what the problem could be and also what kind of cost might be involved. 42,000 miles so out of warranty on something like this I would suspect.

Bump!!!! Since I posted this in the early afternoon, thought I'd bump it up for the folks just finishing up dinner and logging in.

Hate to ask the obvious but does it have any gas in the tank?

Is there a way to find out why the Check Engine light is on without going to the dealership?
(sorry for hijacking)

Both Check Engine and ETC lights are on. Didn't get to do the key dance, tow truck showed up as I was setting Flashpaq back to stock. Flashpaq found no DTC's though....would the key dance have uncovered something else beyond what FP DTC checker would see? And yes, there's half a tank of gas which it has run smoothly on for over 150 miles so I don't think it's bad gas. Also, a large puddle of unknown liquid was under the car, wasn't really pink but since my oil is full and so is my coolant at the correct level my suspicion is my O=rings went on the tranny AGAIN....however dealer says dry tranny would not prevent starting...

Thanks Pete, I appreciate the input, I was checking all my fluid levels and taking stuff out of the car while I was waiting for AAA to come tow it....then it dawned on me I needed to set my Flashpaq back to stock just in case, I was also hoping it might fix the problem although I have never had an issue with a FP tune in 2 years...anyhow, as I finished the reflash and it still wouldn't start I went to the FP menu to retrieve DTC's and it said there were none logged. Right then the tow truck showed up and it was time to go.

It appears my car hates the cold as much as I do...the only goofy issues I've had have showed up right when the TX weather does it's annual belly-flop from 80 F to 40 F in one day. The car runs all summer in 100 F heat with no problems and the A/C blowing ice cold.
Last year, around this same time, I realized I wasn't getting any heat in the car and the Temp gauge wasn't getting all the way up. Turns out, the first time the heat came on the T-Stat stuck open and the car didn't get much hotter than 160-165 F for 3 days until I got it replaced. Last Friday was the first time this year I needed the heater on coming home from work and everything "seemed" OK when I got home but I didn't go anywhere all weekend...it was cold, raining and totally miserable weather here....today I go out to go to work and there's a big puddle under the engine on an otherwise dry driveway and then this happens within 2 miles of driving it. Very strange....

you may have inadvertently erased any DTCs when you reverted back to stock tune. best to check for DTCs before flashing it.

Exactly... I bet it reset the codes when you flashed it:(
Let us know what you find out.
Good luck,

Thanks Sandi,
Well here's an update....car is still at the dealer, they called this morning and said the bottom radiator hose was bad and has to be replaced and the puddle was undoubtedlt coolant in the driveway....
they also said...it started right up and they drove it into the bay and no ETC light or Check Engine light came on!!! Unreal...
They had to order the hose and then they will test the for the problem with the ETC tomorrow once they can drive it. That's one expensive hose by the way, $49 plus the coolant plus the labor I'm looking at $150 already and still no idea why it wouldn't start or why the alert lights are now off....
More to come soon I guess...

loose connection on the throttle body? I forgot to reconnect mine after doing some work and the car would not start and the CEL and ETC light came on...

I had a similar issue and it turned out to be the crankshaft position sensor, which was not a major tear-down to replace it. All is good after the replacement surgery....just a thought.

Thanks Padre Dave, I may have read your old thread when I did a search on this issue yesterday...I remember seeing something about the crankshaft sensor ... guess I'll learn more tomorrow .... the fact that the condition is gone at the moment makes me think Mr Incredible is onto something with the loose connection thing....

Have them check your wiring harness. Remember what all I went through with my '05!

Got the car back this afternoon. Drove it to a parking lot next to the dealer and reinstalled FlashPaq tune ... car runs perfectly ... drove it around for a couple of hours in a variety of traffic patterns ... didn't miss a beat ...
They could not find a single thing wrong with the ETC ... the light has not come back on ... new lower radiator hose installed, system flushed, new coolant added , $160 ...back on the road with no idea why it would not start or why the ETC light came on in the first place ...
I'm just glad to have it back....my wife says I was worse than a 2 year old who lost his Teddy Bear for the last 3 days ...
