To say that I am honored be to have been chosen for LXOM would be an understatement. With a membership of more than 15,000 people, it was humbling to just be nominated.

A little about me now. Being the son of an aircraft mechanic, I learned how to use tools at a very young age. I began by working on my own bikes and eventually several of my friends' bikes. Helping others has always been a part of me.

When I started my first job as a bike mechanic at a Snapper lawn equipment and bicycle retail store I quickly gained an interest in all the internal combustion engines being repaired. After saving up enough money I bought a 1976 VW Scirroco. It was a real beater, but at the time I thought it was a great car. Two months later the head gasket blew. When I went to my father for help he asked me if I knew how to read. Surprised by his question I said "Of course I can!" He then handed me the service manual to my car and pointed to the garage. So armed with an arsenal of tools, I ripped into the motor. The sense of accomplishment I felt after a successful repair was overwhelming.

I joined the Navy in 1988 and started working in the boiler room of a Landing/ Helicopter/ Assault ship (LHA-4 USS Nassau). Not being happy with that I studied and passed the test for Engineman (EN). Wrenching on twin turbos feeding 8-71 blown GM diesels was much more fulfilling. My enthusiasm allowed me to advance, making E-5 in three years. After leaving the Navy I applied for a job with the City of New York working on boilers and HVAC. I still work for the city today and have since become an engineer.

Over the years I've owned several cars ranging fom the 76 VW Scirroco, 72 Ford Maverick, 83 Ford Ranger, 85 Dodge Omni, 89 Nissan King Cab P/U, 86 Monte Carlo, 79 2dr Malibu, and one of my favorites, a 78 Malibu Wagon. I removed the 305 and dropped in a .010" over 400ci SBC and a 700R4 tranny. I added 15x8 Corvette Ralley wheels and put in a 3.73 posi from an 88 Monte CarloSS. She had a full BellTech suspension, and Hotchkis sways. The car was about 85% complete when I sold it to my friend so I could buy my house.

My love for a hot rod wagon has stayed with me as evidenced by my current ride. :) The Magnum is definitely my favorite of all. In the pursuit of modding it, I stumbled across LXForums and have transformed it to the current state.

http://www.lxforums.com/images/LXOM/jonzmgnm/3.jpg

My time here on LXForums has been very rewarding for me. I've accumulated quite a bit of knowledge about these cars and I do my best to try and help others whenever possible. I can't put into words how I feel about the people I've met (online and in person) and now consider a second family.
I want to thank all those that nominated and voted for me for this very prestigious title. I look forward to continuing the friendships, and sharing in the growth of the greatest forum on the net.

Regards,
John

When I was in HS I worked at a gas station... A guy came in with a Volvo wagon... and showed me how he installed nitrous on it... At the time I thought... Why the heck would you do that to a sation wagon...

But as you know... Now I'm converted... :)

I get it man... Dig the malibu wagon! How'd she do in the quarter?

Congratulations on a long overdue honor!

It was ironic in reading your blurb, how similar it was to my brothers, from the Navy as an engineman (my brother on the LHT USS Boulder) to working at the plant for the state. Guess it was just destiny...the winning, not the coincidence. ha ha

Another irony, my brother sits in a chair something similar in front of an old "military style desk" out in the plant. Stationary Engineer. :spock:
