View Full Version : I was beat by a SRT4... should I be embarrassed?

I don't really know anything about how well the SRT4 performs so I'm not sure how embarrassed I should be... though any time a 4 banger beats a V8 its somewhat embarrassing. It wasn't really a fair race in my defense! He pulled up beside me on a four lane highway and we were both doing about 30 when he gunned it, I shifted down to 4th and floored it but it was too late he had shifted down and was pulling ahead. I gave in at around 70, at that point he had pulled to about his rear bumper to my front bumper. My car is bone stock too... I think if I had been more prepared and had my car already shifted down I would have done better but the mag has such a soft shift that it took it a second to get ready.

So should I be very embarrassed or only slightly embarrassed? Be brutal, cause to be honest I really don't give a flip. :) I just have to deal with the 16 year old driver smirking at me next time we pass each other.

The neon on steriods is a very light car. Sounds like he just got the jump on you or he was modified. Mopar offers several kits for these cars. One pushes the HP over 300 with no visible exterior changes! I wouldn't worry about it.

actually a pretty good race --srt-4 0-60 in 5.9s, 1/4 mile 14.4 (according to msn autos)

Most SRT's would take you easy. I know my SRT is much faster than my Magnum R/T. No contest. I do have mods on my SRT. I know of several stock SRT's that get as low as 13.8 in the 1/4mi. Do not be suprised. I beat a late 90's Vette on the freeway, you shoulda seen the look on his face, lol.

Stock vs. Stock the SRT-4 is a bit faster and also there is a ton of aftermarket stuff available for them so you should don't feel bad at all. If my budget for a new car was 20k then i'd be driving an SRT-4 right now.

According to Motor Trend (and their numbers are usually slower than those of Car and Driver), their 300C got to 60 in 5.8 seconds and their '04 SRT4 got their in 5.5 seconds. I read a test with the Magnum getting to 60 in 6.0 seconds. It's all about the power to weight ratio and the manual transmission. You're not driving a sports car. Just a big car/wagon with a big engine.

SRT-4's are badass mini-mites; VERY quick... no shame in losing to one.

We sold our SRT4 when we got our Magnum, it had about $38k invested in it, including big turbo, cams & 2 NX kits. It was a blast putting Z06 vettes to shame and watching old school muscle heads throw tempertantrums when a little Neon whooped up on em'. I have seen many of them go 13.8s in the 1/4 and our cars are running, what 14.4s?? I would say you fared pretty well for being stock.

The SRT4 is a pretty fun car and extremely easy to mod, we are in fact considering buying another one and building another street sleeper.

Yeah a stock SRT4 ran a 13.9 the other night when I was at the track...

Tony,

What track were you at? Just curious.

That night in Richmond. Doug and I talked to a guy at the gas station afterwards he was telling us he ran a 13.9##. He still had the numbers on his window as well. I think it was a red one.

stock SRT-4's are definatly quite a bit faster than the magnum RT's, the 04 STR-4's do 0-60 in 5.3 seconds and 1/4 mile times in the high 13's, the magnums are more around 5.9-6.1 seconds and 1/4 mile times in the mid 14's

SRT-4 will destroy you every time. Do yourself a favor, if you see an Evo or Subaru STi, do not rev on them unless you like to be completely embarassed. They will smoke the Hemi. See my signature below...

You could have improved your finishing spot by shofting down to second gear at 30.It would have been a quick shift back to third but you would have faired better. Not picking on ya just helping

hehe yeah right, the SRT4 is like half the weight of the LX, and with the stick shift, it just is silly to even try to compete. That car was designed for the "fast and furious boy band" type teenager people. It's still a neon, with their cramped interior and crappy ride.

Be very careful when it comes to these SRT-4's. They are very quick, and with the new Mopar Stage 3 Turbo's we have been shipping, you have no chance, unless they can't get any traction. What I mean by that, is these cars with the Stage 3, at a rolling 30 - 35 mph jump on the gas, and the tires smoke up. The new Turbo spools up so quick, they are going to need to learn how to feather the gas to maintain traction on street tires. These Stage 3 Turbo kits are going to be putting alot of these SRT-4's INTO the low 12's, and may even break out high 11's with drag tires. So do not be ashamed, they love beating up on the big cars with big engines. They think it is really cool if you stop and chat with them afterwards, they love to SHOW off all the mods they do. Really a good GROUP of people, at least the ones I have been dealing with. Kinda reminds me of when I was hopping up my old muscle cars. Oh yea, the Stage 3 kits with Turbo Toys, pushes these little rockets to 370HP on race gas!!! YIKES!!!

Yeah Ted@MPSC, 365 HP in a car weighing 2800 lbs is scary.

just out of curoisity, what's the pricetag on the stage-3 kit?

It is the following this car has, it is unbeleavable. These people are so greedy to get performance parts, it is like a feeding frenzy. I would like to see the same with the 300's and Magnums, but I wonder how many will mod the hell out of their car, compared to the SRT-4 group.
Mopar is not going to leave all of you in the dark though, they are coming out with some things, and with the upcoming SRT-8, we will see more.

A LOT of them look at this board. There are very few Magnum owners that HAVE NOT modified thier cars and the there are a lot 300c guys that have as well. Modding your car is a lot lke getting a peircing or a tattoo... once you do it ... you want to do it some more!!

I hear ya Hammerfoot, and that's why we are here. We are enthusiast too, and we love modding our vehicles as well. We also love helping other mod their vehicles.

The advantage the Neon guys have is the scale. I dont have the numbers handy but, I am sure there are many more (perhaps a factor of 10) neons than Magnums/300s.

The other factor is price. Its easy to spend 5k tuning up a 20k car, total cost 25k.

Wait till the Charger hits. They will have to do something to prevent the charger FROM looking like a chump.

Well, I love my Magnum, but my SRT4 does not make me a Fast & Furious boy. In fact most of the SRT owners I know are 25 years & older. I think the motivation at least for me was being able to embarrass $60,000 cars with a Neon. The look on a Porche Carrera when you pull him on the freeway is priceless. 90's Vettes, M'3's & most Muscle cars are just as fun to mess with. With Stage 3 cars getting INTO the 12.05's without much practice, i think the "Neon" has it's appeal. Dodge really did a great job building the Engine as well. Not your normal neon block. PVO used a ton of aftermarket/race technology to build a bulletproof engine that begs for more bolt on power.

Considering the SRT has had a lot of treatment and is a flyweight vs. more than 2 tons of stock Magnum RT Hemi. I've seen some add-ons that will give you another 10-15 HP so I wonder if the punk would beat you again. Now which would be better for making out in - Magnum, hands down.[/b]

The SRT-4 runs high 13's stock. One of the younger mechanics at the Dodge store I do business with is around 13.5 / 13.6 pretty consistently. He's waiting for a turbo upgrade,

There is also another young gun there who has a 95 Neon that runs high 12's. He put a turbo on it and has nitrous too. He does great work and that thing is quick !

So no, an SRT-4 could beat a Magnum R/T .

C'mon you guys! the srt4 is a little matchbox of a car along with those other evo's, sti's etc. none of them can compare to the magnum when you take utility and performance INTO consideration.Try putting 4 200lb men with ski gear or golf clubs in one of those wheez boxes and see how much fun it is to drive or be a passenger in. Just my 2bits worth

Ummm... yer bits are showing..But seriously, riding in a fully loaded down mini-mite car SUCKS! In a Focus I once had a weeks worth of groceries for a bunch of heavy eaters, 4 friends, the smallest is a stocky 6 footer AND 4 gallon buckets of paint!
The car was stifling despite the AC on WOT and the ride was FROM HELL for the next 45 minutes! In a Mag = piece o cake!
